Both are good bikes, either one will make a good trail bike. The z250 might be a little bit faster in the woods due to its lighter weight (about 70-80lbs lighter) and will be easier to throw around, but I believe the lakota will have a little more in the power department because of its larger displacement. I have had my lakota for over 2 years and it has proven to be very reliable, never has left me stranded on the trail. You will be happy with the z250

Remember, the lakota motor is right out of the bayou, and the air filter is just a piece of foam between the carb and the air box. In a shoot out in 4wheel atv action 2 years ago, the lakota was run against the 250ex, and in a straight line drag the 250ex beat it. So as far as power and some handling department, i would go with the Z250, because it is even faster than the lakota sport and the 250EX

QuadSportFreak- In the ATVaction shootout they said that they had set up a 200ft drag strip and then posted the times, they posted the 250ex with a time of 6.7 sec and the Lakota with 7.0 sec, but if you look back at the article you will see that the Lakota posted a higher top speed and a faster time on the MX track that they compared the machines on. Also if you go to Dirtwheels March 2002 you will see they did a comparison between the 250ex and the Lakota, and the Lakota was the winner of that shootout. As far as acceleration they said "Acceleration contest repeatedly showed the Lakota taking an early lead and pulling the EX throughout the powerband. While the 250EX had smooth, controllable power, and was fairly quick revving, the Kawie's stronger torque gave it the edge in almost any competitive riding situation" Now you might say, well Dirtwheels is a crappy mag or something, but what you have to remember is that Dirtwheels and ATVaction are ran by the same people, they even have the same address because they work out of the same office, so if you accept one magazine as being truthful then you would have to accept both.
My personal experience with the 250EX is that when I raced one I beat him when I was stock and also later after I had modded my lakota with a pipe, jet kit, and filter. Also the suspension is better on the Lakota over the 250EX. The 250EX is not a bad machine its just not as fast the Lakota......what I do like about the 250EX is the light weight, the 250EX is a lot easier to throw around then the Lakota. With all this said, I would now probably go with the Z250, as it seems that it has a little more power then the 250EX but also has the light weight to go with that, I think the Z250 would make a great trail machine.

The article in DirtWheels about a 250EX out accelerating and out handling a Z250 is a bunch of crap. I think Honda must have forked over some money on that one. Two other mags. have said that the Z250 is by far better than the 250EX, and I have found this to be true with my experiances too. I have also rode a Lakota (but not a Lakota Sport) and would choose the Z250 over it.
