Default 2003 Z400 stopped running

Hi all,

Was out with a friend of mine yesterday, I was on my z400 and he was on my wife's honda recon. Anyway, we got split up and I was looking fro him. I was putting around at low throttle and I felt the bike start surging. It did this for a short while and then died. It would restart but only idle, and any throttle would kill it. We towed it out.

Got it home and messed with it. Checked the fuel line, was getting fuel. This is my second weekend out with it and third tank of gas so I'm pretty sure the gas was clean and water free. Checked spark, it was fine. Compression is fine. So I pulled the fuel line off the carb and shot some compressed air through it. Reconnected the fuel line and now it's running but still bogging (but not dying) when you give it throttle. Cleared the carb out again with the air and this time cranked the engine while spraying carb/choke cleaner into the fuel inlet. Let that sit for about 1/2 hour then connected everything back up and it's good as new.

I noticed that there is no filter between the tank and the carb. I'm going to install one of those clear inline automotive fuel fiters, just seems too easy to get dirt in the gas considering how much mud we put these things through. IS there a fuel filter anywhere else, maybe inside the carb? I find it hard to believe that there is no fuel filter, but I didn't see one!

Anyone else have something like this happen?

You don't need the 2nd filter. There is a filter in the tank. Is the plug fouled? Have you done any mods to the Z?

I'd take the carb off and clean/inspect it.

No mods whatsoever. And judging by the fact that compressed air through the carb cleared it out I'd say something got past the filter in the tank, or the air filter. This was the first time I opened my airbox and it was clean, and the filter was installed properly. I'm going to put on the inline filter anyway, this way I can see if anything is getting stuck in it. It's running OK now so as long as it does not happen again I am not going to pull apart the carb. Sparkplug is clean and gets plenty of spark, and the coil is putting out enough juice to thoroughly shock my entire body. I'm guessing somehow something got stuck in the high speed jet, because of how it was running at idle but not anywhere above idle.

i know it sounds dumb and obvious, but it happend to me before when i first got mine, the little air line that holds the gas cap on isnt crimped is it? lol, i had it happen to me once, i didnt know it was for that, and damn if it didnt make the same thing happen.
anyways, its probly not it, but thought i would throw it out there.

Thanks, but no, it was fine. I even took it off and made sure it wasn't clogged.

i dont think its a bad idea to put a 2nd filter in, the 1 in the gas tank isnt that good at getting the small stuff.

i have a 02 honda xr200 dirtbike and i was riding it and it ran out of gas so i put it on reserve and i got all the way up my street and about 100ft from my house it died. i started it and it idled then i went to give it gas and it stalled. got home and my dad and i took out the fuel filter and cleaned it good. there was only a tiny bit of stuff in there but that was preventing gas i supose. it ran great after

Adding a filter sound like a good idea. I had a similar problem with dirt before, took the carb apart and had a piece of dirt in the main jet.
