Is it cold where you live... you dont really have to do anything if so. Just put the choke all the way down (on) start it up and let it run for maybe about 20 seconds and then slowly push the choke back up (to off) and you should hear it idle way down.

Its not really a choke, its an enrichener circuit in the carb. When you turn it on, it opens a passage in the carb to let more gas in. There isnt a fast idle cam, like on a car carb, if you need more rpm, turn the idle adjustment screw, and later when it warms up, you can turn it back down.

Hondabuster is right, they call it a starter(enricher) plunger. Try what he said to do and if it isn't working correctly remove it from the carb and clean it. Even with the O-ring on it water still seems to leak in and rust it, very likely if you use a pressure washer. I had a problem with mine and sure enough it was rusted.........

My Z dont seem cold blooded, but the Mojave is!!! I have to kick and kick on
that thing, then it starts and quits about 3 times, the fourth time it'll keep
running, but you hafta leave the choke on for quite a while.
My Dad's Mule is the same way.
The only prob I have with the Z is sometimes when it is REAL cold it wont
start, and I hafta warm the carb a bit first. I always starts though.
