dominator... The way that you describe the acceleration on the LT500r, almost makes a guy want to find and buy one. That sounds like one awesome bike. I would assume that it would be almost impossible to ride that machine in the winter because of the overwhelming power. Hopefully one day I will meet someone that owns a Quadzilla, cause I'd sure like to park my a$$ on its back, and see what its like.

The quadzilla can be described as having unbelievable torque right off idle all the way through with no real power spikes. The engine acts like a extremely powerful 4 stroke. There is no flat spots in the powerband, just raw power anytime and anywhere you want it. Even with its long frame, using no tricky clutch movements at all, the quadzilla will flip over backward from raw power as high as 3rd gear when traction allows. It is very intimidating to ride and ride with.

......Yikes...... Is there still quite a few out there, or are they hard to find ?? What do you think one would be worth ??

Yea, you can still find LT 500R's for sale. If you go to
www.traderpub.com

You will see many 500's for sale and some are in mint condition. Of course this is a California website, but I look at it every week(new listings every thurs.) Not to mention they show pics for all the quads and trikes.

Dominator,
The 90mph range is probably right on the nose. My first one I bought in 87 and it ran 80-82mph depending on the weather. With a pipe and a k&n the monster breathes much better. I lost my 87 in a fire about 2 years ago so i built my new one from the ground up. Ct did my motor and it rips. Lagears in ca built me a great swingarm to replace the akward factory one. We tried the car behind method and mine ran past 100 mph which is where the speedo stops in my truck. If I had to guess I would say 105-110 would have probably been it's top. Anyone wanting to buy one beware of all of those squids who were to lazy to grease the endless amount of bearings on them, I have yet to find a used one that had good bearins all the way around. They also need peticular maintence to keep all the bolts tightened to their proper torque. ANd yes they will go over backwards very easily with all that power.
Ride hard and safe see ya in the woods!

I got my 87 quadzilla for $900. It was in running and driving condition but thats about it. I have been replacing all these needle bearings in the front control arms and drilling holes for grease zerts. I just did my rear axle bearings and drilled a hole in the aluminum bearing holder and put in a zert... makes me feel so much better when I see all that water flying out of my needlebearings when I grease them. If you happen to ride it in water, and you dont have zerts installed...plan on replacing them often. I still have a completely stock bottom end and all stock gears on my very used 87. I looked at my crank bushings (tried to find play in them) and there is no play yet! The only trouble I have with the bottom is the tranny will sometimes shift from 4th to 5th on its own when accelerating hard. Does anyone know how much farther these motors go over? Mine is freshly boored 1.00mm over. How much farther can you bore?

How about jetting. I have been playing with my jetting and settled with a 440 main jet, with no airbox lid, FMF fatty pipe and power core silencer and FMF reeds. 420 is stock, I still think I'm a little lean. What main jet do you have for what mods? Is no airbox lid a good idea? Has anybody tried no airbox, just filter?

Dominator,
The Zerks are a great way to handle the front bearings, still take the upper a-arms apart from time to time because the 87 are real hard on those, they are the only year with that style of upper a-arm. I take meticulous care of mine, I remove the fenders and wheels after every ride to clean and inspect for any damage. I also take my axle and a- arms apart after about 8 rides, to look for that water damage which you are right about being hard on those needle bearings. As for the air box lid I will run mine without it on dry days but I go up 2-3 main jets depending on the temp, I run a Keihin carb so I can,t tell you what jet that is for yours, I also use a outerwears prefilter to trap out the dust and maybe a splash from a unforeseen puddle. Oh by the way watch that zerk on your axle carrier I did that on my last one and it helped but the grease didn't want to get into the bearings very well and there is a chance of over packing the grease and blowing out the seals. Also if you have bearings that have the black seals on both sides you will have to pop off the ones on the inside or the grease can't get in there(I figure that you know this I just wrote it in case someone else might try this and forget to look) well we got a little off the posted topic here but oh well it might help somebody. See ya

Off topic is ok with me. When I got my seals they were only sealed on one side, and the other side was open. Thats when I got the idea for the zert. The old ones I took out were not sealed on either end and not greasable (Gee, why did they burn up) I'll keep in mind not to overgrease and blow out the seals. When you say you went up 1 or 2 jet sizes, do your jet sizes go by 10's also? Mine is like 420 430 440 450 etc. I should probably step up one jet for the pipe, so stock is 420 so that would make it 430. Then with the reeds and K&N and no airbox lid, go up another jet to 440. Sound right or too lean yet? I dont need concrete answers, just your opinion will do. Thanks for the reply
