will gas stabilizer hurt anything?

This time of year, i usually only put in enough gas to get me where im going, and bring along the can, just in case. That way, if it sits for awhile, all that goes bad is 1/2 gallon or so. Stabil helps, but only works on fresh gas. If the gas is already bad, then adding stabil wont help a thing.Stabil works by inhibting evaporation of the volitile compounds.

I've always used Sta-Bil as well. I run it in my boats, lawn mowers, weed wackers, quads ect...
Last year I found something called Sea Foam. It stabilizes gas, but it also decarbs and cleans your pistons. It will keep the inside of the motor clean if you run some in your gas about every four tanks. My local marine mechanic has been using it for years, and swears by it.

Before storing my machine I make sure my gas tank is low. Then I turn the gas valve off and run it out of gas. When I want to use it again I fill the tank with fresh gas that mixes with the little amount of old gas that was in the tank, then turn the gas valve back on. Works for me.

i know gas goes bad, but i had 2 year old gas, and we dumped it in my bro sp 500 h.o ,and my vinson, it ran perfiect, although it did not smell like gas, but more like laqure thinner. the gas sat in a shed in maine, in the cold for years, and heat, we used it in our sled in the winter, only so i guess gas can't ever really go bad, and yes sta-bil is the best stuff to use in any senario

That is about the worst thing you can do. A tank that isn't full only promotes condensation. Condensation is water, the last thing you want mixed with your gas. Also, it is actually the gas vapors that turn to varnish, so you want your carb and float bowls filled with gas. Never run them dry.
Best thing to do for any gas powered motor that will set for a while is to fill it full, add a gas stabilizer, run it for 5-10 minutes to let the treated gas get through the carb. Pull the plug, and spray fogging oil into the cylinder, then turn the motor over without starting it to disperse the fogging oil over the piston, then put the machine to bed.
