From what you said I see no reason to believe the clutch is shot. If the clutch is shot then normally the quad won’t go forward or the motor revs faster than the wheels when you hit the throttle. If you don’t have that problem than your clutch is not likely shot. Probably just the pressure plate or the basket.
When I bought my 91 LT it was like that. What happened was the bearing on the shaft that the clutch arm pulls on to move the pressure plate had either failed or been left out for some reason. The end of the shaft had eaten all the way through the plate so I was not moving the plate at all. It felt like it was just real hard to pull but after investigating farther I realized it was just bending the clutch arm. The cable had already been adjusted all the way to pull more on the plate and the shaft was jammed against the inside of the cover.
I’ve also heard of clutch baskets getting so grooved that the grooves hold the plates in place and the clutch therefore won’t disengage.
Either of these problems would be obvious with the cover of and easy to fix.

If you took the clutch cover off before this started happening, it might not be assembled correctly. I had similar symptoms once because the rod in the clutch cover was not engaging the geared shaft on the pressure plate.

Here's another possibility: the arm that the cable attaches to that actually engages the clutch may be in the wrong position. If you take the side cover off, you will see this arm has a few different settings. The arm may be too far back or too far forward to be allowing the clutch to engage/disengage properly. Happy hunting.

I had the same problem. I toke the side cover off and found out that there was a piece missing. There should be 6 springs and little bolts holdong the clutch together, mine onley had 5. I went to www.bikebandit.com and found just one bolt and one spring and $3.45 made my suzuki not do that any more. I works a 100% better know. You might want to purchase a Clymer owners manual first. It really talks about the steps, because some of the steps can sort of be confusion. I am only 13 and payed for it and did everything myself.
