LT250 Set Up
#1
Finally got the quad running tonight and took it for a ride up and down the street. Didn't seem to be as crisp as I thought it would be.
Temp tonight was about 0C or 32F.
Its an 1985 with stock motor. I have a BR9ES plug in it, air screw 3/4 turns out, clip in the middle (3rd) and a 220 jet. Everything is pretty much what the manual recommends. Anyone recognize anything thats off?
Also, I forgot to look in the manual but since I am on here anyway, is the choke on or off when its in the down position?
How long does it take for this type of quad to warm up in this temp?
Can't wait for spring.

I have a 87, but a 220 jet seems big to me, I dunno if the dense cold air makes that much of a difference or not. I have some mods on mine, I took the air box lid off and I run at sea lvl, and I run a 160 main. but if ur spark plug looks good after a test then i guess it's fine. As for warming up, yea if you try to run mine when it's cold it won't seem right, it loads up fast, it won't rev high, just give a a few min and feal the head, you will know. The Choke is off when the lever is down by the way.
Hope this helped.
Good Luck
LOL just an afterthought, you have a 250R right? the 2 stroke?

Thanks for the tip on the choke. It seemed to run better with it on and now that I think of it, I may have forgot to put the air filter back in. That may have been part of the problem. Way too much cold air. Good thing it was a short ride. I'll try it again tomorrow with filter and choke off. That should fix it up.
Yes it is a 250R 2 stroke.
Carb on an 85 is smaller than your 87 so jetting is a little different. Also, the colder it gets the bigger jet you need. Good thing I had a big jet in there without the air filter or I might have popped it! Yikes. That would of sucked. Guess I was a little excited to take it for a ride.

A 220 main might be a little fat for a totally stock motor, but at that cold of a temperature it's probably a good starting point. The stock main for an 85 is 200 with a 45 pilot, so you're probably running rich. These carbs are also known for the needle and needle jet wearing so that you're flowing too much fuel on the low speed circuit. I could'nt get my jetting dialed in until I replaced both.
I was looking at your pics, did you paint the stock pipe? If so, adding an aftermarket pipe and silencer and a 34mm carb from an 86 and up will really help uncork your bike.

Yes Sam, I painted the stock pipe for now. Going to make sure its the bike for me before spending too much more money on it however I'll keep my eye open for the items you mentioned.
As I mentioned, part of my problem last night was no air filter and running with the choke on. Round 2, hopefully today.
Thanks guys.
