what are cams? what do they do?

The cam decides when the valves open, the duration they are open, and when they close.

 

Dont worry bout asking silly questions, on old boy didnt even know how to remove his seat. its good u want to learn..
If you go to [L=]www.howstuffworks.com[/L] and type in cams in the search icon. There is an article on twing over head cams, same thing as you want but there are two cams instead on one.
