hi, I just found a small crack in the frame of my 86 LT250R. I've heard that this is a common problem with these type quads. Now my question, if the frame has a tendency to crack, do I find a reputable welder to "patch" up a relatively thin wall tubing, or try to locate another frame?? I know racers use a frame by Laeger, but I can't seem to locate such a business anywhere. Nor can I find an aftermarket dealer that carries everything but a good, solid frame. Otherwise its a great quad. Starts on 2nd kick, even though it needs a serious rejetting job. Came from 3,000 feet down to where I live now, 6 feet. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. BTW, the crack is down under the left peg where that back tube meets the horizontal tube.

That is the same place mine has cracked before also. I did weld it up and it seems to be holding alright for the time being, but time will tell. I welded it only about 1 month ago, and have ridden it maybe twice since then. I would try welding and see how it holds. An aftermarket frame is the best way to go, but I can't justify spending that much on my quad, so I plan on building my own, much stronger frame. I have cracked mine in every place I know possible, so I have an idea of what needs to be reinforced. Later

I can't find any aftermarket frames at all. I just spent 3 hours searching the internet and mags and came up with ditto. The closest I could figure it is ATV Salvage in KY. And who knows if their frames are any good. Welding it seems more and more probable now.

i have an 86 LT250r and i cracked my frame in 2 places. it really sucked. but i went to a welder and he foxed it right up for me. not very expensive either. just make sure the welder knows what hes doing before you let him do it. don't let any old guy with a welder do it. so far i haven't had any problems with the welding so its good i think.

As a professional welder I may can give you a few tips. First help out the welder (lower cost also) by removing any items that are in the immediate area of the crack so all he has to worry about is the welding. Ask to have it welded by the TIG process as this is a much more accurate way to weld. Also it generates no splatter and is just right for welding thin wall tubing and brackets. This is the same process that is used to weld airplane frames together. Also don't forget to drain any gas in the tank and and clean the weld area of any mud, grease, etc. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies,

I called a local weld shop this afternoon after work and they quoted me between $35 and $50 to do it. Thats after the footpeg and nerf bar removal, etc... Seems like the best way to go now I think.

Well, got home from work the other day, my quad was gone. I got a phone call from my brother sayin he "borrowed" it and the crack in the frame broke all the way through now. Think I'm gonna have to kick his @ss now.
