How does a "reserve" fuel tank work?
#1
Last week we bought our 1st ATV, a Suzuki Ozark.
Today as my wife is riding it, it just dies. I looked in the tank and saw some gas in there. We tried to restart it for a while without luck. Then I switched the reserve tank on and it fired right up. We felt pretty stupid.
So does anyone know how a reserve tank works. I mean, it's all in the same tank. We only fill one gas tank--not two. How is the reserve kept separate? Is there a pocket of gas in the tank that is kept away from the rest of the gas?
According to the manual, the total tank capacity is 2.8 gallons with .7 gallons of that being the reserve tank. Sure enough, when I looked in the tank after it died and before I switched on the reserve, it looked like we had about 1/4 tank left.
What would happen if I topped off the fuel tank and then switched the selector to the reserve tank and rode on that? Would it die after using .7 gallons and I would have to switch to the regular tank or would it go through the entire 2.8 gallons without any warning that I am getting low on fuel?
Does anyone know how these work?
Thanks
Dave

if you can imagine removing your petcock (the on/off switch)from your tank,,,you would see 2 tubes that stick up inside your tank vertically,,,,draining gas to your engine.
reserve would be the shorter one
If you run on reserve,,,you will just use up all the gas.

i thought reserve just took gas from the bottom of the tank??? yeah for the Z250, it's the same thing, 2.8 gallon tank, and .7 reserve. that's a quarter tank on reserve which is pretty cool, but yeah doesn't your quad take the gas kinda up a little in the tank? and reserve takes it from the very bottom?
