05' KQ owners: Is the new KQ right for me?
#1
Hi everyone. I've been watching and reading all the posts about the new KQ and I think I might like to get one. I currently have a 2002 Prarie650 which I would trade in. I do have a few questions or issues and I'd appreciate hearing from all the current 05' KQ owners. I like having a machine with plenty of power, but rarely do I ride fast. I have never ridden an ATV with IRS, but a smooth ride is probably the most important feature I'm looking for in a new ATV.
1 Due to shoulder injuries I need an ATV that has very light steering, even with a passenger aboard, will the KQ deliver here?
2. Is the KQ's handling and steering effort increased by adding the winch to the front? Can a winch be installed on the rear end of the KQ?
3. I have a 2002 Prarie 650 with 167 hours on it, what would be a decent trade in value for this atv?
4. I ride in areas with very heavy brush and I'm concerned about the added CV joints and the possibility of tearing the boots, has this been a problem so far with the KQ?
Thanks for all your thoughts and opinions!

1. Steering is about the easiest, don't know if it is easy enough for you.
2. Technically speaking, every pound will add to the steering effort, but I don't think you will feel the difference with the winch.
3. You should be able to sell that P650 for $4500 or more, but the dealer may offer you less in a trade.
4. There will be aftermarket guards. You will need to get them. Also, there are kevlar boot covers alreay available that will help a lot, maybe they will be all you need.
A friend called me last night and just got a KQ (he's not on the forum).

Bruce403,
I am new to the forums, and a new atv owner/rider. In fact, this is my first post.
Two weeks ago I purchased a King Quad 700. I have only gone riding one time, so I don't have much experience. I have done many years worth of 4X4 with full-sized trucks. I was able to drive the KQ up the steepest hill my 4X4 truck could climb, with ease.
There is a company called Montana Jacks that has a receiver system for atvs that allow the swicthing of the winch from front to back via a square receiver. The nice thing about Montana Jacks system is the winch is mounted in a high position, so it won't be operating under the mud/water that you are stuck in.
Warn Industries also has a system like this, but the winch mounts real low.
Neither company has an applicaton yet for the King Quad.
I have been in communication with Montana Jack, and they expect to have the King Quad application done sometime in January 2005. I will be getting one of their receiver systems for my King. They also have a bunch of other goodies that go into the receiver too.

It is way easier to pull out a stuck quad with a winch that is mounted lower. Its a pain to get to the cable but when the winch is operating it tends to hlep lift the quad up instead of pulling it down, making it more difficult to pull out.

1: The KQ steers as easlily as any quad I've been on, probably easier the turning radius is very tight. The steering does get quite a bit heavier in 4x4, more than the Prairie, you may want to test this before you buy.
2: I was worried about the extra weight in front too, I havn't noticed that the steering is any different with the winch on.
3: ??
4: CV and radiator protection is pretty light, there will be aftermarket guards available shortly I'm sure. The winch helps protect the radiator a bit.

snowolfe is right you will get a better pull from a lower point.but to get around that with the higher mounted winch is ;if possible try to connect your winch hook to a slightly higher point than the winch height on the quad.sometimes thats not possible on thinner trees due to the base of the tree being its strongest point.but it does work
