I have a stock Lt and would like to get more performence out of it. I dont have much money to spend on it so i was wondering what the best mods are for a small amout of money. I am probobly going to break down and get the Paul Turner pipe after a while but i dont want to spend near that much money on much else. what should i do?

I just got rid of the air box and just left the filter right on the carb. This might give you a good boost in hp and all you have to buy is a jet

removing the air box requires more than just a jet you have to rejett the carb aver the whole board not just the main.
yeah you get more power out of removing it but hope you only ride when it is dry. otherwise your better off removing the airbox lid and the retarded boot between the box and frame.

you can also advance your timing(don't know about stock compression but you may have to run better gas depending on how much you advance it) you could get your head cut maybe even domed i had mine done for $60 then when you get it back polish the inside if it isn't already done(depending how much you get it cut you may have to run a blend of race gas and 91 or 91 and avgas or even better avgas and race gas blend ,still cheaper that strait race)

if your looking at doing you top end(piston kit $90) soon buy a dremel if you don't have one smooth out all you ports and transfers sand them to about a 400 or 600 grit not polished except for the exhaust port you want to get that port polished. replace them stock reeds with some god reeds since you have a 87 up you can get a whole reed cage but even boysen power reeds(stock replacements in stock cage) do help.
you could also carfuly take your dremel to your carb but you will need to buy gaskets or make some you can get a carb rebuild kit for around $30, or just buy a stock 250r carb(36mm instead of the stock lt 34mm carb)

Changing your front gearing(sprocket) is a cheap mod that can produce more low end torque or top end speed. Dirt cheap to do.

yeah dont forget to properly jet your carb. you can modify your wheeler all you want but if you dont jet your carb right its not gonna make any difference. in fact it might even slow you down. if i were you i would prolly buy some boysen reeds for you stock cage, change the airfilter, and dont forget your jets!
