Like Recon said, it's vacuum activated. Meaning that the motor has to be running or turning over in some way for the fuel to flow. It basically has to be "sucked" from the gas tank while in the "ON" position. In the "PRI"(prime) position fuel will flow freely without anything being done at all.

Well it is always in the "ON", and it was flowing pretty freely with out the engine on.

It wasn't leeking a little bit, it kept leeking.

that's those new machines for you...lol j/k i'd like to have a Z to play around on, but i'd miss the 2 stroke power.
The only other way i could think of shutting it off would be take the gas line off the carb and put a plug in it till you're done.

How long did it stay flowing ? It will flow pretty good till the bowl is empty. I had to have mine stand on end for a couple weeks and once the bowl emptied out it never leaked a drop.

Stumbled on this post because this just happened to me today. I guess my only question now would be do I need to change my oil or replace my air filter that was soaked in gas? My air box filled completely up after only 5 minutes standing up.

Dry the air filter out by squeezing as much fuel as possible out of it, and check if the oil level has risen and if the oil smells of fuel. If it does, change it. However, standing up, there shouldn't be a way fuel gets from airbox to engine. When on the ground, it can run through the breather pipe into the engine.
