Your Thoughts POST ECM update
#1
Well I as the rest of you have read this and many other forums waiting and wondering. I took my KQ and my dads today and got the new updated ECM. My dealer's thoughts are as the rest that this has been blown out of proportion. I could not take the worry so I bought the 48 month extended warranty which gives you a total of 54 months to not worry. I got it for $450.00. I do feel that the reverse is now aggravating due to the limiter. I have not even touched the override button on my bike yet but I can see you would be forced to use it if you needed to back up more than just a few yards. I also am pretty sure that my quad is not as quick as it was before although the fix was not supposed to effect anything else. I am interested to see if the rest of you think it effected anything else as far as low end power. I really like the bike and think it has plenty of power no matter what, just concerned that this new ECM may have altered more than just the override function.

Well I just picked my Kq with the new ECM today. Here is what I found. It sucks!!! I was remaining quiet but I'm a little upset with it. Forward performance has not changed but in reverse this thing is terrible. It max's out at 13km in reverse which is about 8 MPH. I tested my Vinson today as well and it max's out at 22 km which is almost double. How wonderful it is to have a 700cc machine that performs like this. Even at 5 km in reverse the king starts to sputter. I bought this unit because I wanted better performance in the mud. With this kind of repair I don't think it will have enough have enough RPM to spin the tires without the override. Because of this lack of power we will be useing the override more which will be harder on the reverse. For future buyers do not purchase a KQ until this is resolved.

Gobbler.......you may want to check your paperwork on that extended warranty. I think it is an additional 3.5 years (not 4 years) for a total of 4 years if you add your factory warranty to it. I bought one too because of this - not happy.
Pass the word on the electronic petition. Hope you guys have signed it.

I also noticed the expiration date is 48 months from today, although I know you get to keep your 6 month warranty. I have a copy of sale and the warranty date it should not be hard to prove when the warranty runs out. I will check with them tommorrow on th edate although I have proof of date of purchase and the 48 month warranty they would have to honor it through the total 54 months. I love this quad just do not think a 2005 top of the line quad should be limited in the regular reverse to less than 8mph. I have had two artic cats and they both would do much better in reverse.

BigBang you are right. I called the number on the contract and they showed me the small writting that says it runs concurrent with the original warranty. So it only extends the warranty to 48 months instead of 6. Thanks I would not have seen that without you saying something.

I've yet to really work mine out. Just got put in today, it starts to sputter at 8mph in reverse. It also was sputtering on the way home at 45mph? Almost poping? It never did that before! Hopefully it goes away, but so far it doesn't seem to be the same machine, even in forward? I wounder if it takes it time to adjust to the engine or something?
If it don't clear up...I'll be a tad bit upset! This thing ran great before!

I have a 2004 TRX400 ES Honda Rancher. I took it in for it's ECM recall last year. It's never been the same. I took it back 3 times, still never ran the same. I don't know about the mechanics of ATV's, but when I would drive it I wouldn't let it go over 30-35 mph because it sounded like you were still in first. It was winding out so bad. To me, it didn't seem like it was shifting. The dealership noticed the problem but couldn't figure it out, they even replaced the clutch. Since then we hadn't driven it much. Now we got a notice for a tie rod recall. I called the same dealership and explained that I was apprehensive in bring it to them. He told me he would do the 1st recall again, he said they really didn't know what they were doing on the 1st few. Evidently they were skipping the last step. Something to do with driving it and making some adjustment. Anyway, when we tried to pull it out of the garage & into the truck, the thing no longer goes forward or backwards. I still haven't heard anything from Honda, I am hoping that this is a symptom of the ECM recall and that when they redo the recall it will clear the problem. Has anyone else had this problem?
