I have a 91 and 92 Quadrunners, and have stripped out an 85 Quadsport, and all three had a round cap with a hex nut molded into the top. They had o rings around the threads. Otherwise I'd try a very light skin of red RTV gasket sealer, and be careful not to get it into the threads too much.

Same as what I've done, actually think the manual states that. GE high temp silicon sealer is my favorite. The red stuff. I think it comes in black now.
