sp400 just got 3rd in the atv rider mag. If i got a sportsman it would be a 500, but they are kinda pricy.

 

Go with the Yamaha....then again I own a Yamaha so I might be a little Bias. Even so I would stay clear of polaris.

In every review that I've read or seen the Suzuki Eiger wins out in the 400 class. In addition you have the option of manual (autoclutch) or automatic transmission. It is also the least expensive machine in its class by several hundred dollars.

If you're jumping up to the 500 class range, then the top two are the Suzuki Vinson 500 (also availaible in auto or manual) and 2005 (not previous models) Polaris Sportsman 500 HO. The redesigned Sportsman in now more nimble and quicker than it was in the past. It also has IRS. The 2005 Sportsman is winning most of the 500 class reviews, with the Vinson (previous winner for several years running) coming in a close second.

Finally, if you are looking to get a good deal and want a new machine, look at buying a 2004 machine that's still hanging around the sales lot. These are usually discounted to get them moving. Now is a good time of year for such a purchase as they are starting to clear the way for the 2006 machines that will land late summer or early fall.
