Utility quads at the dunes?
#1
Headed to southern Oregon for vacation this yr and taking the quads. The question is are the KQ's going to be worth a darn at the dunes? Also will Jr's little 90 get around in the sand?
Thanks for any response, it might change my mind on bringing the toys or not!

Your utility quads will do just fine at the dunes. They run around all over the place at St Anthony and the sand at Oregon dunes is a little firmer, so they'll do great. Junior will get around on the 90 enough to enjoy himself. My son ran a Yamaha 4 stroke Champ 100 at St Anthony and it was surprising how far he could get with it. Take 'em, you'll have a ball! I've seen quite a few Utilitys in Oregon... Most without paddle. I'll bet it will climb most anything in Houser/Spinreel but some of the big hills on Winchester might be chancing it. I have seen some utilitys with 4 paddles all around and they'll tractor up anything.

I just got back from 2 days in Florence, OR, with my Suzuki Vinson. I had my stock tires. It did fine. I went all over the place in the sand. There are a couple of challenges that made life interesting. First, the weight of a utility quad will make it sink faster. Keeping momentum up is very important to making it up the big hills. I would hit the big ones with the throttle wide open and take as big a run as possible to build speed to carry me up to the top. Another problem, also because of the weight, is that my quad would slide sideways in the soft sand hills instead of nicely turning when I would get stuck on the big dunes/hills. This was also a problem when sidehilling on some trails along the beach. It makes for a nervous moment until you can get turned to go down hill (it was nearly impossible to get it turned back up hill because it would keep sliding sideways down hill). Also, I would make sure that I hit the hills in 4wd to give it the extra pulling power when it would slow near the top of the dunes. I also used 4wd sometimes when starting out to avoid digging down when starting out from a stop. I mostly ran in 2wd to be able to slide when turning, but definitely used 4wd for climbing and sometimes on trails where there was a risk of sliding sideways.
I would think you KQ would work better than the Vinson and climb the hills with more gusto. Just be careful not to stop on the dunes/hills as your going up and always keep the momentum up. You will have the same problems with the weight of your quad. But, I also some Polaris Sportmans out there. If their 760 pounds can play the dunes, your 600 pound KQ will do fine.
As for the little ones. I saw some youth quads out there, but mostly along the beach where it was flat and the sand was not as soft. I would not think it would be a good idea to take the little ones into the deep sands. If you do bring a tow rope or winch, just in case.
