Default problem with 04 eiger

I have a 2004 eiger automatic that is making an intermintant clunking noise when it is in 2WD . It sounds like it is coming from the front end. It almost sounds like its wanting to engage into 4WD. I was wondering if it could be a linkage problem that might be able to be adjusted? Any guesses or suggestions?

does your machine have a manual hand lever on the left side of the machine that is used to select 2wd/4wd?

It has a lever on the right side on the handle bars.

i think the eiger uses a cable attached to that lever to engage the 4wd. if thats the case, there should be a cable adjustment somewhere....

It doesn't seem picky when it does it. It does it when I turn or go straight. it doesn't jerk the bars and I can't really feel it when it happens. I haven't left it in 2WD long to really pinpoint the source as I am afraid of doing damage mechanically.

i'd block the whole machine off the ground and test it, try to figure out exactly where the noise is coming from. as said earlier, it could be a cv joint or it could be inside the differential.
