z400 timing chain

my z400 is ticking pretty good form the right side of the engine and i read somewhere that it could be the timing chain tensioner could be maxed out, so how do you check this? thanks.

Pick up a manual, it will be your best friend ever.
The way to test it is by 1st removing the center bolt in the tensioner. There's a spring on the back side of it, remove the whole assembley. Once the center bolt is removed then remove the outer two bolts and pull the housing off the head. Once you have the tensioner housing removed then simply pull on the shaft w/ the teeth very slowly and count the number of clicks left before it's extended all the way. Once there are only about 2 or 3 clicks left before full extension then it's time to start thinking about investing in a new cam chain, preferably a HD chain so you won't have to do it again. There are 12 clicks on the tensioner. When I reinstalled mine with my heavy duty chain it went in 4 clicks, leaving me with 8 clicks off adjustment.
