Default Larger tires on front of 4x4/ ratio prob?

Hi, I want to put some bigger tires on the front of my 88 Quadrunner. How will this affect the steering. They're a lot wider than the tires on it and they're about 2" taller. Also will this hurt the tranny when I put it in 4wd? The new tires are maybe 1/4 inch shorter than the back tires.

Thanks in advance,
Murph

Sure enjoying that cooler air yal sent down from the North!

If it doesn't end up damaging the drivetrain, it's gonna handle badly. If you go with a taller tire in the front, you gotta increase the back tires with same height increase.

Thanks Hemi. I guess I need to keep the scrawny front tires!

Yep, you can definetly mess some stuff up. The tires need to be the same size in 4x4. The bigger circumference on the bigger tires will cover more distance to make a full rotation. This means the smaller tire will have to spin faster to travel the same distance as the larger one, but the original gearing will want to spin them the same speed. The only way around it is find the formula related to gearing and tire size (I've seen them for trucks) and change out your gearing to that the wheels spin the same speed. But the easiest (and probably cheaper) way to go is to just get the same size tires.

Okay, I'm confused. The tires that came with it are probably 1-2" shorter on the front than the back. I'm wanting to put some on that are almost equal front to back. So I will be getting into a BETTER situation if I do that???

thanks again,

The stock gearing is setup to work with the stock tire sizes. If you do not keep things as they were from the factory difference wise your going to be VERY hard on your drivetrain.
