King quad lowing blue smoke
#42
Well i got a K&N filter today and when i was taring the quad apart i noticed that the filter (neither one) fit the air box. With the thing as tight as you could get it, it wouldn't even touch the top of the air box. You could take and put a 1/4" bolt between the bow and filter. Aaron

I just purchased a new 2006 king quad and with only about 1 mile on it I saw a puff of blue smoke. Have not seen it since. Where can I get one of these Uni filters? Is "uni" the name or is that short for something?

I am a Suzuki dealer. I have sold over 200 King Quads. We know from experiance on other types of equipment that paper filters do not filter as well as properly oiled foam filters. We replaced every single air filter in every kingquad we sold before it left. I can tell you I have seen KQs here from other dealerships with dirt in the intake.
The dirt that goes through the filter does so in the paper and some of it is caught on the foam lip inside. It doesnt go through the foam if it is tightened down properly.
I see where many of you have had problems and dont feel like you are getting satisfaction. I can tell you that yes they know they have a problem . Yes they will fix it for you. If you are nice about it when you go talk to your dealer you will get a lot better response. If you are nice and your dealer wont help, find a different dealer. Parts are normally available and Suzuki is approving the warranty claims 100%.
As a side note, we see more units with engines smoking because dealers and owners do not properly oil their foam filter. Its an education issue.

Well , do you want the bad news first or the baddest news ?
$ 900 - $ 1100 estimate to fix the king .
1100 miles and they say the topend is shot and needs to be rebuilt .
I asked about the many forum post referring to the air filter problem and
they have seen or heard nothing about it . I can't remember if I found a
few post that said Suzuki was quietly paying for the rebuild or that they
were NOT and owners were pissed off ? ? I am at least going to try the
800 # later on today or tomorrow and see whats up . My Atv is not
ridden very hard , 1/2 the miles are from here at the house / fields , in the
1100 miles the oil has been changet 3 or 4 times , 3 air filters , 3 plugs ,
always ran 93 octane , cleaned after every ride , and had changed the
coolant twice since new . What else are you supposed to do from an
owners stand point ? I refuse to put $ 1000 bucks into a machine that
only has 1100 miles on it and has been taken good care of , I'll sell in it on
Ebay for whatever I can get for it and start over again ,
DANG , those drum brake hundas are looking pretty good right now !!!
I wouldn't B#@ch if it had 5000 miles or 2500 hard miles , but 1100 miles
is just WRONG !
It just been one of those days today !

From quite a bit of other forum post , nyrocs a main one , more than a few are finding this out as the kings get close to the 1000 miles mark , I have really noticed a drop in power the last few months and now I know why ,
It would run 73 mph when it was new , now about 58 mph is it !
The OEM air filter seems to be the culprit , I've left a call in at the 1 800 #
I found out there WAS a service bulletin out on the air filter problem , but since alot of them are just now showing up as more miles get put on the kings , MAYBE suzuki will come thru , uummmm 5 % chance is my line on it !!

Valve clearence good , said piston , cyl. walls scarred , rings shot .
All scheduled maint . done AHEAD of time oil changed at 100 m 300 m
650 m 900 m and at 1150 ( summer riding = extra change ) all with filters , synth. oil . 3rd plug , always 93 oct. , engine ice , I was on the 3rd air filter when I found nyroc's site and saw the post on the filter problems , so I went right away and got the uni twin air and cage , but I guess not soon enough 1/2 the miles are around the house / pasture putting around .
! I've not heard anything back from suzuki today .
The BAD part about taking it somewhere else is that
1. They say I owe $ 85 x 2 hours for "labor" to "find" the problem ( i only ok'd the first one and said to CALL BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING else , no call ) I have yet gotten to talk with the mech that is actually working on it and its 50 miles away so its hard to just run over there and see what the heck is going on .
IF they will warrantee the work they are going to do for 6 months , that may not be TOO bad if it stays on the 900 side of 1100 .
Mine had the symptoms of the other ones that had the same problem , so its not out of the question that it is shot on the top end . It just gripes my **** that this hell of a machine is "worn out" in 1103 miles ? ? I'm am TRYING to find out when the service bulletin came out about the air filter problems , this dealer had my king for tie rod recall about this time last year and I'm thinking / hoping that it came out BEFORE and then I could say they should have checked it while they had it and show SOME negligence . I am still waiting on the 3 or 4 owners that did get their's fixed by suzuki out of warranty and see what channels or personel they went thru. So far , nothing back ?
Ebay no reserve as is sale is looking good right now !!!
I was already thinking about trading it , but the more I thought about it I couldn't find a reason I wanted to get something else , I really like it and the way it rides , my only complaint really was the steering kick which a damper will cure most of , but it dont' look good sport fans !! The ole checkbook may have to do the dance on this one ? ?
Oh well , fingers crossed , toes crossed , cheeks stay together !!!!!!!!!!!

Got to have a decent talk with the shop manager this morning over the phone ,
Parts : $900 ( IF they don't find anything else after they get into it )
Labor : 5 - 7 hours @ $ 85 bucks an hour $ 595
PLus TN tax of 9.75 % $ 145
TOTAL : $ 1640 to get a motor ( Topend ) rebuilt @ 1100 miles . Thanks Suzuki
and a BIG thanks to Whites cycle and marine for going to bat for me NOT NOT NOT NOT !!!
They SAY they talked to Suzuki's area rep and he said NO WAY would they pay to fix it .
The shop is saying I have dirt in my engine and intake , well no #Hit , wonder how it
got there ? I got the jist that if I had taken the king to them for ALL my service , then
they might have been willing to work something out . Dealer says he done all he can and if
I want to keep trying Corp. Suzuki , then that was up to me . I think I am going crazy ? ? What a crock all around .
Dealer says Suzuki will blame me or my local mech for the problems since I replaced one filter
and the mech did one . Dealer says it leaked down 90% on one test and had low compression ? ?
think I'll go
back to drum brakes and a carb and kick Fuel injection technology to the curb !!! I don't expect
much from Corp Suzuki , but I did expect a little more effort from the big dealer here .
Man , what a week !! Anyone want a KQ cheap ?

Here is a post from nyrocs , a reply from the dirt in the engine threads

Now I don't want to ruffle feathers but I will throw in my .02.
The stock filter does let minute amounts of dust in but not enough to destroy and engine. Here is the real story behind the engine rebuilds.
Quite a few of the 05-06 motors that went into assembly had a problem with the plasma coating of the inside of the engine. Some of these engines are not showing any signs of damage or low compression until later in life and some very early on.
My dealer has rebuilt 2 engines because of this problem one had 80 miles and the other had over 1200. Suzuki is warranting this condition regardless of the age of bike and period of warranty.
They have not gone completely public with this because they are waiting to see how many engines they replace without admitting the problem. If they admitted the problem they would have to issue a recall so instead because of complaining by the pulic it was much easier to say there was an issue with the stock filter and give anyone who asked that fancy new red one which is exactly the same as the stock except red. That is much cheaper to do than issue a huge recall for engine rebuilding.
Remember dust is almost microscopic and will easily pass the rings in the engine regardless of the compression and seal. Expesially with that plasma coating on the cylinder walls which is nearly indesructible.
MAKES YA THINK JUST ALITTLE , MAKES ME HATE SUZUKI THAT MUCH FASTER IF ITS TRUE . DON'T KNOW HOW TRUE THESE STATEMENTS ARE , BUT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SUZUKI !!
Thanks whites cycle and marina sales in Chattanooga , tn for standing up and going to bat for your customer who has been buying stuff from your dealership since 1981 ! I bought my first NEW bike ever from them and several down thru the years also some from his brother's honda dealership .
