Default Trouble with my Eiger

It was running fine while up in the mtns. Unloaded it, washed it off, now it's running like crap. Since there's hardly any mud holes around here (just lots of rocks) usually it's just dusty, so I hose off the plastics. I'm careful not to squirt water were it probably shouldn't be. But I figured I had gotten something wet that shouldn't have been, so I limped it to it's parking spot and covered it up. I figured it'd dry out and be fine. But a couple weeks later and it's still messed up. It starts and idles fine, but if I push the throttle (even in neutral) fairly agressively, it cuts out and kinda acts like it's flooding, but no black smoke or gassy smell. If it push the throttle ever so slowly, it'll rev up but still sounds like it's cutting out when held at a constant rpm. I checked the air filter and it's pretty clean (still basically white) as it only has about 175 miles on it. I pulled the plug and it's a little blacker compared to my wife's Eiger (same age). I thought maybe the choke was on, but the lever is all the way up... only thing I can think is the throttle plate is stuck closed or the ignition box has gone bad.

Any other ideas? Since I have the extended warranty, I was just going to schedule an appt and take it in, but if it's something you all have seen before, I'd rather try to fix it myself if it's fairly easy.
Thanks.

Could be several things.
Check the vent hose from the carb to under tyhe seat and make sure it aint kinked.
Remove the air filter and rev it as hi as it will go and put your hand over the intake. This sometimes will suck any dirt out of the jet.
Follow the choke (enrichener) cable to the front of the top of the carb and make sure the cable is seated properly. Sometimes it will pull out and catch.

Some eigers have a black plastic that gets caught up in the jet, but I would think they have that ironed out by the 05 models.

i assume you installed a fuel filter, right???!!

As far as squirting water on it, dont worry, its pretty waterproof as long as its not sitting in a p;uddle as deep as the seat.

I have a fuel filter, the in line screen in the carb, and make sure the gasket on the airfilter is sealed good and still get dirt every now and then. I usually use the hand over the intake trick.

umm no I still haven't...

I'll try all your suggestions this Saturday. As well as putting on a fuel filter... do you have a model/part number you'd suggest?

Thanks for the help.

Any filter that will fit in line. Sorry I dont have any numbers.

Does the extended warranty cover dirt in the carb?? If not, and lets assume thats the problem, would they charge ya?

There are other possibilities but they are too painful to think about.

I was having the same problem...but mine started on an uphill climb...it started spittin and sputtering...kinda like the choke was on...

I let it sit idling for a few (15) minutes...and it seem to come out of it....

It happened once more too...Once i let it idle, it came out of it.
I put half a bottle of carb/fuel injector cleaner in the next tank of gas i put in.

Havent had any problems since..

If all that doesn't help, you might want to try draining all of the gas and putting in fresh, or at least add some dry-gas to your tank.

I forded a fairly deep river (creek) once and some water came up over the front rack, but didn't seem like it got around to the intake, but my Eiger started sputtering and running poorly. I drained the intake box and the float bowl, but it still missed and sputtered occasionally for weeks. I replaced my carb with my upgraded Vinson carb and took apart my problematic stock carb and found water STILL in some of the smaller passages and crannies. Remember, this was after weeks. I'd add some Heet to your gas and dry and dry the water out of there.

OR you could always pull your carb and disassemble/clean it.

AK, my brother lives on 4000 acres in Ashland. I'd love to come out there and ride sometime.
