I'll probably end up using a hunk of steel if it ever comes to me having to make one. I have too much of it laying around anyway, lol.
Well, I've got some rather disappointing numbers for ya. The top speed for a 230 with 22 inch tires and a 13/39 combo is 55.8 mph @ 8000 rpm. I'm guessing at the max rpm, but 8000 sounds pretty high. I'm also guessing the primary ratio is 22/69 (that's what the 230e has anyway). I don't think you can get any higher gears than a 13/39 either, but you could get bigger back tires and go faster. So, about the only way you will break 60 on a 230 is to put it in the back of your truck.
If anybody has a clutch basket out and wants to count the teeth I can pin it down a little closer. It will be a long time before I tear my clutch down.

Bout ready to pull the clutch, what do I need to count, exactly?
Got 68mph onthe 230 with my buddies trail tech, and another buddies gps............side by side 400ex and lt400..... were we going downhill?????????
I could see one or the other being off by 3-4 miles an hour, but 8-10mph?
You are probably correct on RPM.. are there rev limiters on these? is there any way to raise it? should we even try?
Back when I raced 2 stroke bikes in the early 80's the first thing we did was buy this lil chingadera, forget what it was called, similer to a cherry bomb nowadayz, that raised the rpm limit.. Man, what was it called??? Tip of my tongue!!!

You have to count the teeth on the clutch basket. There should be something close to 69 teeth. And then count the teeth on the gear that meshes with that one, something like 21 or 22. It should be on the crankshaft.
68??? What size tires? What gears? With 22 inch tires and 13/39 gears you would have to turn something like 9750 rpms! I guess its possible, what do I know....? No wonder the guys at the shop had concerns about breaking the rod with a 270 kit. Can you imagine the kinda forces involved with slinging that big ole piston up n down that fast with the 230's big ole stroke?
With 9750 rpm and 22's with 13/39 1st = 22mph, 2nd = 32, 3rd = 43, 4th = 55, 5th = 68mph. That's pretty fast! Considering the 250r would do 72 and twice the power.
For reference, the stock 230 and 250 with all stock stuff right out the factory would do 60mph at 9750rpm. If I recall from when I was a kid reading ATVSports and DirtWheels, the top speed for the Honda 250 in the shootout was the fastest at 54mph. So, the stock 230 would be turning 8500 at 52mph (which is slower than 54). I think the 230 always ended up in last place in those reviews,,, I remember thinking it was due to comparing it to 250's.
I don't know if there is a rev limiter. A couple times I held the trottle open all the way and thought I was revved out and then fan the clutch into the next gear while still holding the thumb firm.... I thought it wouldn't rev up that much more when I hit the clutch,,,, but it did.
I don't know what that thing is called for the 2-strokes. Not that much experience with those....

It was geared pretty tall back then! not to mention those rear tires were probably 23in!! I'll pry one from my staffordshire bull terrier and check the size!

I'm debating with myself atm over whether these would work or not http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...WQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It would be cool to because I could use the shocks from a 300ex especially since mine are shot. I'm not a welder and I know this has been adressed in several post but I have never seen any type of confirmation response regarding can an LT230QS use a different machines A-Arms.

ive got 67 mph on mine with g.p.s. moon revving ill bet u get way over 8000 rpm. stock revs on 400 ex is round 9000 ish and limiter comes quick! At least on the ones ive ridden do

reving to the moon ya kno xtreme rpm. our 230 as far as i kno have no rev limiter also. Any body ever try slotting the stator plate to increase timing???? Going to have the machinest at work slot mine 3 mm in advance so i have kinda adjustable timing. on my old yz 400 it really made the screaming bike scream louder way more hit on powerban
