Sooooo....I just got scolded by the machinist. I took him the head with the valve guides, valves, retainers etc, and when he saw my polishing job he was not pleased. He asked me what I used and I told him a rotary tool with light sanding and buffers to get the carbon off and he said I had created some "low" places and that it now needed to be milled but he was pretty sure that it would be still usable. He said the valve guides may not have to be replaced but would check when he takes it apart. He said unless it's pretty obvious then it can cause more harm then good trying to get new ones in.

I just got back to the house to grab him a gasket so he can use that as a basis for the milling. He told me to put the rotary tool back in my toolbox and don't do that again.[img][/img]</end quote></div>

No, you can't grind on the gasket surface. I thought you was shining up the cooling fins when you said something before.... I probably should have said something.... Sorry.

I always put sandpaper on a sturdy bench and mill the heads that way. I'm milling the jug for the lakota right now. I got .011 off it last night. Only .039 to go.

No, I never got it. I think your machinist polished it for you. I know you said he did some piston work.

Mythbusters Rocks!

Well I'm learning, you can't catch every dumb thing I pull thru posting on an internet site and I should have known better...now I know never ever do that again, but it's going to cost me literally

If you get a decent caliper, you can mill the head yourself. It needed milled anyway to produce a nice flat area for good quench. All you need is a few packs of sandpaper from lowes and a decent sturdy surface to clamp the sandpaper to. The rest is elbow grease and measuring your progress with the caliper. One side will be a little more sanded than the other, so you adjust your sanding by observing the measurements with the caliper. Even if your off a couple .001, it wont matter on a single cylinder engine. Don't take off anymore than .050 though. You may end up with valves hitting the piston. Better check that anyway before final assembly.

I used 60 grit to start off with, then I'll use 200 grit to finish sand it down to the right size.

PG, are the skirts polished on your piston too?

The 6995 on the piston means 69.95mm. All wiseco pistons have the size at the end of the part number. Mine says 6750.

I was wondering if I should polish the skirts. Pros are it will slide easier and not grind on the cylinder so much. Cons are it will lose some diameter and be a little loose in the cylinder. I think I'll leave it alone,,, maybe just a little smoothing.
