You can find the "clymer" service manuals on ebay all the time.

Cut my quad out today. (for the newbies, see above). Dug out my spare engine cases and assorted parts. About ,oh, 6 mounths ago or so I started an engine project that just didnt get off the ground very far. I think im going to persue it a little more this year.
What do you guys think, should I spend the time, effort and money on a full, ground up build or punch out the one that started this whole thing? Quite frankly, im not shure what else I can do to a new motor that has not already been done to the existing one.
No I dont have a Big bore kit on it, god only knows when ill get that. No Ive not had it ported or a three angle valve job performed (if thats even possible). But maybe it would be a good idea to just build a nice solid SPARE bottom end. Ya know, just in case there is a "severe come apart" down the (dirt) road. After all they dont make these things anymore (just incase you have not noticed).
That reminds me. If you do not have a spare stator cover in your parts bin, git (southern word meaning "then aquire") one soon. This is the one part that can determine the on trail status of your 230.
Back to point.
I admire, require and expect your opinion on this topic. What would/did you do if/when you were in my situation?

Later,
BigMc

By the way. I was able to re-submit my author icon. The good folks at atvconnection helped me out.

i think you should try to lighten up the bottom end and see how it works out. wieght reduction on rotating masses does wonders for response

Good idea.
Maybe follow suit with high performance engine builders? lighten the crank and rod?
Maybe grind/polish the rod and remove material where its possible without weakening it.
Or lighten the crank halves.

Hmmm. Something to think about.
Thanks 230.

I would suggest you keep your existing engine the way it is, Ya you know it runs!! My build is a whole seperate engine top and bottom, thanks to good luck on ebay. scored the entire bottom end ( looks almost new) and the entire top end (brand new OEM) from the same guy. Bought all this stuff 10 years ago and it sat in boxes, so I scored. i agree with lightening the crank and rod, probably should save it for when you get the big bore, or is it worth doing anyway? I have not a clue. I have plans to build 2 more "modified stock" engines "just in case". One spare for my bike, and one for the ole lady's. Her enigne is gonna need refreshing in a year or 2. By the way, amazing how much a difference my old staqe 1 cam has made to her bike.

The stage one is a good cam. It makes the most of the stock set up without more investment. There is no need to upgrade the valve springs and you get a better power band to boot. The stage 1 cam is a great way to pump up your 230 without pumping out your wallet.
The stage 2 is where im at now, the stage 3 is for the 230 rider that wants a machine thats harder to keep up with (and maintaine) than todays elections in Iraq.
Here now, gone in a instance.

Im going outside and run mine around the block!! Just to say I can.

Well, it was bound to happen. And it did. A normal rider would of been proud. But this just amplified the feelings I already have.

I was out ridden the 230 today, ya know, just around the neighborhood. When this kid flagged me down. I stopped. And noticed he must be about 15 years old. He asked me what I was rideing. He did not recognize the machine.
I told him it was a LT230S Quadsport. He then asked "who makes it"? I stated PROUDLY, no one, it has not been built for 20 years ( being an 87, I wasnt lieing).
At which point I fired it up (one kick P.G.) and took off in 3rd gear in a wheelie back in the direction of my place.
If ever there is a point in a persons life that they are more proud of their accomplishments, that was one of mine.

You guys are part of my story. You understand what it means to be aboard the 230. The fact that it still exist is a testament to the pride you take in your machine.
