2005 Vinson performance mods

The stock needle has a shoulder washer made on it. You can find some tiny washers and put under there to raise the needle out of the seat a little. There again you are gonna be double working yourself. But if you have plenty of time go for it. I dont know a good starting point for for tuning when using a stock needle and shimming, stock air filter, and the mods you have. Good luck and maybe it wont take to many carb teardowns to get it close.

Hey Camo,
I got it pretty close this weekend. I first added a 138 main and got a noticable result in low range but then went on to a 142 main and the thing will ride a wheelie in high range now. I can't believe the difference. However, the air screw doesn't seem to do much for it. Also, the throttle response doesn't seem to be any better. I need to do something with that slide spring.
Have you heard of those air screw's for the Kehin CVK that has the Knurled **** on the end so you can
adjust it with your fingers? I found a guy talking about how he added one from a Harley Carb on his dirt bike. I forget what kind it was.

Glad to hear you like the gains. Yeah the mix. screw is a pain to adjust. I used a bit for one of those multi-bit screwdrivers and it works pretty good, had to grind it down a little. Did you put the DG snorkel on? If you think those mods impress you, wait til you put the K&N and Dynojet kit in! Then the Webcam! Did you increase the pilot size? By the way its not just the diff. slide spring that gives you increased throttle response its the new needle jet too. They are in the kit.

Camo,
Darn, I didn't think about using one of those bits. I sacrificed a small craftsman screwdriver for the task
and it doesn't work all that well either. Lessons learned...
Yup, I installed the DG Snorkel. I see what you mean about he DJ kit so I will be ordering one here fairly soon. I've got a $50 bag full of Kehin jet's so I don't need any of those but I do need the Needle's and the spring's out of the kit.
How hard is it to swap in the Web Cam? Do you have to do any other mods to the valves or springs?
Did you send your's off or did you buy it without the core?

Yeah, as far as the Keihin jets, what is the largest you bought? I think if I ordered the kit I would buy some extra DJ mains between 132-146. The kit comes with an asst. of mains but they are not large enough when using the DG snorkel and Webcam, largest is 128. I ended up using a DJ138, which is the same flow as a Keihin 152.
The Webcam is not too hard to put in. The key is patience. I ordered my Webcam and after I got it put in I returned the stock cam for the 125.00 core. The cam from them comes without the compression release, not needed. I did not have to do any kind of lash adj. or anything. The Webcam is a drop in. I did check my valve settings after the install and everything was good.

Hey Camo,
I think the jet's I ordered range from 130 to about 160 so I'll never need to order any more jet's. I will however need
the new adjustable needle and slide spring from the DJ kit. I guess since I can't buy those separately I'll have to spend the
50 clams for the kit.
Yes, I put on the DG snorkel and changed the pilot to a 38. I'm running a 142 main. I suspect it's a little too rich for my
stock air filter.....If I don't pick up a K&N here pretty soon I might do that.
I don't have the dough to throw around so I'll prob have to send in my my stock cam initially. I wonder how much more
power I will get out of the cam after these mods. Do you remember if it was a significant difference? Was it worth the
money to you?
I took the Quiet Core out yesterday evening and dang it sounds good. I think I'll leave it out. Do you run your HMF with
it or without?
**Also, I've been considering another mod to the air box lid. My mechanic did suggest this:
If you take the airbox lid off and turn it over you'll notice that the inlet tube runs the length of the lid to the back where it
has an inlet and a splash guard. If you take a Dremel tool and cut that portion of the tube out the air will not have to travel
all the way back to the back of the airbox through the tube and will dump as soon as it get's through the DG snorkel into the
air box. The only drawback would be that if you got a little water splashed into the snorkel it will come straight into the air
box and drip on the filter. But if you've got the filter oiled or if you have one of those slick water repellent prefilters over
your K&N it would run right off.
What do you think?

As far as the airbox mod, I didn't do it. I think it is better not to take the tube out so that your air or water will enter at the back of the box and not on top of your filter. It wouldn't hurt to call Diamond G and talk to them about it though. I dont know if they tested the snorkel with the lid factory or not. Modding it could harm or help the air flow. If modding it harms air flow, guess what, you would need a new lid. I am happy with mine the way it is.
The cam gives it more power no doubt. Worth it?-Yes imo
I run mine with and without the quiet core. Depends on where I'm riding. Right now its in for hunting season. I dont rejet when changing. I tuned mine without the core in and it runs a little rich when I have it in.
In the spring I plan to give the Vinson a little more attention. I have read about some more mods that I might just have to try besides bigger tires.

Camo,
Ok, I see what you mean about the airbox lid. I'll call Diamond G and see what they have to say.
On another subject: I will eventually add both the Cam and Clutch kit too it. However, I called EPI
and the lady said that they do not offer a kit that is designed for modded engines. She thought that
their stock kit would work fine with just the HMF and the DG intake but I might have some problems
with it if I install the cam. What do you think? Have you had any problems with yours? What would
you suggest?

I do not have the EPI kit. There are several boys on Highlifter that have them and they said it really helps with hook up. All it is is like a stall converter in a car. I like to be able to putt-putt as well as haul a** and the clutch kit raises your engagement a few hundred rpm's. Depends on which kit you get as far as the stall. I think any of the EPI kits will work on the Vinson with no more mods than we have with no problems. The AC 500m is the same engine basically as the Vinny and they pretty much have to go with the clutch kit to turn the 29.5" tires. Dsmith has a manual Vinson and he installed the kit and loves it. Pm him on Highlifter and he will give you a review. I may get one in the spring when I get some down time but need the putt-putt and my Vinson for hunting at least til Febuary. Get one and let me know.
