4 strokes have made some great gains in the last 10 years or so in weight and hp ,but matching or beating top speed against the two strokes isn't all there is to it. It's the time it takes to get there.. Some of these old screaming two strokes can still be waiting at an 1/8 or 1/4 mile finish line for four stokes to cross.

I'd be interested in seeing the numbers to back this claim up on all 4 stroke 4wd's.

I've gotten my Outlander 650 up to 68 before I ran out of smooth trail. That was exciting enough for me. Did it again on a long, straight snow covered trail last winter. That was in 4wd to keep the rear end from kicking out. I imagine the 1000's from Polaris and Can-Am can get up over 80. Polaris' power comes on smoother. Less of a hit but plenty fast. Can-Ams will wheelie with Max models (read heavy and long) with the 800 and 1000. Haven't been on either long enough to hit top end of the speed.

I've slid out of a sandy corner and into a tree doing about 20mph. Wouldn't want to do that again going any faster.

It's very tough to find spots in New England where you can hit the top end speed of a quad. Best would probably be on one of the larger lakes in the winter with a little snow on it. Even then, I'd pre-run it to look for ice shelves where the ice has shifted and raised a giant slab up.

I once rolled a quad going backwards at about 2 miles per hour, once at about 3 mph, and twice going about 20. Thankfully, didn't hit anything with my body.

While it's not an ATV, a friend of mine has a 1000 Turbo RZR. I've been 88 mph on it. There is a trail going from Ellsworth to Eastport, Maine where you can go that fast on, although the cops are starting to set up radar traps. 88 mph on dirt is too fast for me, I think my butt pucker is still left in his passenger seat. By buddy is a tuner guy and plans to tune for more power...
