Cooling fan not kicking in on '98 LTF-500F
#1
Well, I was riding around this morning, I was going about 40MPH or so down the road, and after I got about 4 miles out, I noticed my legs were just about to start on fire because the engine was so freakin' hot! Normally the fan would kick in around that time but it never did. I had to ride home with my legs resting on the front rack.
I'm wondering what could be the problem, I checked the fan fuse, and it's fine, but that's about as far I as I got with that... It's too hot out here in Colorado to even think straight today.
Also, the oil temp light never lights up when the engine is that hot. Actually, in the 8 years I've owned this thing, I don't ever recall seeing that light come on, except for when the ignition is first turned on.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I have a 98 quadrunner also. The only times my fan has not worked was when the fuse under the seat blew. I suppose it is possible the fan just stopped working and needs replaced. My brother has a 04 Vinson and the fan went bad on his a couple months back.
You had many problems with your bike? I bought mine new in 98 and still have the original battery in it. I just recently replaced bearings in the rear drive shaft (went bad from mud being inside there), but have not had any major problems to speak of.

No problems at all, aside from the coolant temperature light and cooling fan thing... it's been a great little machine. I've got 8,100 miles on it, plus a ton of hours worth of snow/gravel plowing and shoving junk around, and I haven't had a single thing go wrong with the thing. Well, scratch that, I guess it needed a new fuel pump about 5 months after I bought it. Fortunately, it was covered by the warranty (I bought mine new also).
I have the original battery too! Those are tough little batteries. It starts up just like it did when it was new, I've never seen anything like it.
I'll take a closer look at the fan tomorrow. I just remembered, I washed a bunch of mud of off the engine a couple weeks ago, and I'm thinking I might have disconnected something...

Well, just as I had hoped, the water blew a wire harness apart. It was some kind of temperature sensing wire, because it went to the engine. I plugged it back in, and took 'er for a spin and the fan kicked in like it should!
Water temp light still doesn't work. But I've gone 8 years without it, and have managed not to blow the engine up, so I don't see why I need it now.
Now I just need to buy new mudguards for the thing, and it will be as good as new.
Speaking of as good as new, I looked at the pictures of your LTF500F, quadracer325, and I see you've kept that thing in great shape! I'm amazed, mine looks NOTHING like that anymore.

That's good to hear about your fan.
As far as mine being in good shape, all I can say is that I am totally **** about keeping stuff clean and normal maintenance stuff. That bike hasn't gone over 250 miles without getting an oil change and everytime mud is involved when we ride afterwards the tires, fenders, and skid plates come off for cleaning theneverything gets lubed up once it's clean. My wife says I'm just cheap which she's right.
I just cleaned it up yesterday because I think I'm gonna sell it along with my quadracer. Thinking of getting a kingquad or else a new vinson, not sure yet. I got some pictures I'll try emailing you, bet you'll be surprised.
How far are you from Gunnison? My bikes made a few trips there along with me and my bow or muzzleloader.

Oh, I'm about 250 or so miles north-east of there.
Man, I'd love to buy that machine from you. But the one I have now doesn't act like it wants to quit me any time soon!

Well being the computer whiz that I am you can see it only took me 3 days, a dozen beers, and some help from my wife to get those pictures sized so they could be uploaded on here.
