to clean it right you should dissasemble it completely. and use a good carb cleaner
you can try additives but I dont think it will help you in what you need

Its very common to find those screw heads stripped. Not many people know about the philips screwdrivers with the anti cam out ribs. If the correct screwdriver is used, the screws wont round out. For now, just use a vice grips, or a chisle, and unscrew them...then toss them and buy new screws, most of us buy the socket head cap screws, so you can use an allen wrench, instead of a screwdriver.
You definetly dont need to buy a new carb, if this is all thats wrong.
Make sure the mixture screw is adjusted right, and that the pilot jet comes out, and the center hole in that jet is clean.
Old gas can cause problems, and non stock motor can too. Is the air box and filter totally stock...how about the exhaust?

Have you got a dremel tool? If you can get hold of one with a disc cutting/grinding attachment, grind in a slot on the top of the screw, until you can use a blade screwdriver. I guess you could do it with a file and lots of time too.

Good luck.

Default carb cleaning question

I'm letting my carb sit in the garage soaking in Carb cleaner... I have a question...

I have a 2005 LTZ 250 and it only run with the choke on. I figured it was varnish inside the carb since it sat for about a year...

I did a quick clean of the carb yesterday and still had the same problem. Today, I completely removed it and doused it in cleaner. How can I tell if the jets are cleaned completely? Could there be another problem I should be looking for?

The quad can be ridden all day with the choke on, but as soon as the choke is switched off, it does not idle (idle screw was adjusted with no success).

The pilot jet is plugged.

It can be very difficult to unplug it because the center hole is so small. Sometimes using one strand of 20 gauge stranded wire will unblock it...if that doesnt work...get a new one, they are about 6 bucks.

If you hold the jet up to the light, and try to look thru it, like looking thru a straw, you should be able to see light coming thru the center hole if its clean. If you dont see light coming thru the hole, its still plugged.

If you drain the float bowl,( theres a screw on the bottom of the carb float bowl for this, )before letting the quad sit for more than a week, this jet wont plug. Its the constant evaporation and refilling of the float bowl, while sitting over time, that makes that jet close up. That center hole is about .012" diameter.
