Default new 89 LT250S... sort of...

Our first ATV. I know nothing.
Good, now that that's out of the way... Frame serial # JSAAJ48A4K210**** says 150-249cc 4-stroke single, 1989. body looks like a LT250S. engine serial # J418-10****says 150-249cc 4-stroke, different production # as frame though. Much earlier. The LT250 models had 249cc engines, right? Or do I have a LT230 in hiding? Last owner told me it was a 85-86 LTZ250. Ever heard of that? It was raced by the owner before him. That owner sold it when he went up in class. I got it for $500 + a shotgun.(about $600-$650 total) New rear brakes and some other stuff. Mikum carb. blah, blah, woof, woof. Aired up the tires and put gas in it, then took off on it. (Good deal from what I can tell.) Took the kids around a field after I got better aquainted with it. It was modified from what I can tell, because it leaves the line on two wheels! Definitely a racing setup! No rear fenders or kick plates. I'll try to post some pics.
ANYWAYS...can anyone tell me what quad I bought? I need some body parts, and I want to get a manual to work on it. I was told that the LT230? has same frame and everything, so the body parts, etc. will bolt right on. (If its a LT250S) HELP!!!

You've got an 89 lt250S from the sounds of it. The 10th digit in your frame tells me it has to be an 89 model. Is it a manual clutch? If it's a four stroke manual clutch, that's the only thing it could be. The only other manual clutch ATV's suzuki made in 89 were the 250 and 500 quadracers which were both two strokes.

If it does not have a manual clutch, it could be a 230E. They had electric start and auto clutches, but were still fairly sporty and had plastic that was nearly identical to the 230 quadsport.

BTW, the number on the engine isn't supposed to match the frame.

The 230 sport (85 through 88) and the 250 sport (89-90) had frames that were very similar, but not exact.

The LTZ250 didn't exist back in the 80's. The Z was added to the model number on more recent quads from Suzuki and denotes electric start.

thanks for all the info. It has a clutch handle, so I'm assuming it is a manual clutch. I never use it except for first gear though. I've always shifted by RPMs. (I have ridden ATVs a little, just never owned one.) No electric start. Key hole on the left side, under the handlebars. Starts without key though; which is a good thing since I have no key.
So...where can I find 250S parts? Should the oil in the engine be filled up to the fill hole, like a differential, or transfer case, on a truck?

got any pics of it?? I looked at the vin #'s on my bike and your engine vin# has the same beggining as mine J818-10, it is a 246cc air cooled engine. 5 speed with reverse and a manual clutch. Where is the frame vin#?? i cant find mine. What kind of mods are done to it? does it have a aftermarket pipe? I am getting my engine rebuilt next week and i am looking for a pipe for it.

Do not fill the oil up to the fill hole! There is a little window down low in the cases on the same side as the fill hole. Clean it off really good, and make sure the quad is on perfectly level ground. Fill it until the oil level is between the two marks on the engine next to the window. Better yet, replace your oil filter as well and just put in exactly the amount Suzuki calls for. I believe it should be 1000 or 1200 mL, I can't remember but I think it's also stamped in the case.

Also, you might consider getting ATV/motorcycle oil that is specifically for four stroke engines with oil bathed clutches. Expensive, but good.

David, on the 230, the VIN is on the lower frame rail close to the shifter. It's on a plate welded to the frame. Probably near the same place on the 250.
