1986 LT50 NO SPARK - NEED HELP!

All of a sudden I'm getting no spark on my sons 86 LT50.
I took the plug out of the head and watched it as I held it while I pulled the pullstart. No spark at all.
How do I know if the problem is with the coil or the magneto?
How complex is it to remove the magento and replace? I just installed a new pull start (what a task!) and also a brand new OEM gas tank. Had to paint it and clearcoat it as well since they dont come like that anymore from suzuki.
I just put it back together last night. I had it started a few times afer I replaced these parts last night. But then this morning I went to start it for my son and I got nothing.
I checked all the wires to make sure connections were ok as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My son really wants to get back on and cruise after I just spend a couple weeks replacing the tank and pull start.

Well I would make sure that you have the killswitch on because by accident people forget to push it over...I would first go about by changing the spark plug and did you make sure you grounded the plug on the engine or somewhere metal on the quad...If you aren't getting spark after the new plug I would try taking a multimeter and see if you are getting any response voltage wise from the coil and see if you are getting any response from the magneto and if you aren't getting anything from either I would say you switch is bad (if it has one not familiar with that year model check the key switch and killswitch if it has one)...Check these few things and let me know how you make out...Also look to see if your ground wire is on and that the pull start is actually turning the engine over.

thanks. Its a brand new plug though and it just started last night on the first pull after I put on the new gas tank. I started a few times. This morning nothing. I took the plug attached to the wire on my daughters trx 70 out of the head and pulled the pull start and the thing was sparking like crazy. I did the same thing with my sons lt50 and there was no spark at all.
Where is the kill switch you speak of? How do I push it over? Are you referring to the tether cord on the rear of the bike? If its unplugged I wont get any spark? I will have to check that in the morning although I am positive its plugged in.
By the way this bike has no key and no kill switch on the handlebars I am aware of....Just a off/run red button. In is off and out is on.
Let me know what you think and I'll let you know on the tether cord in the morning.

Well as a determined daddy I couldnt wait till the morning. I just got home from doing a side job and its 12:30, went out to the garage, pulled out the tethercord and popped it back into place. Pulled the pull start while holding the plug and OUCH! Its sparking like a champ!!!!!!!!
DAMN TETHERCORD!!!!!!!!
Needless to say i just put the bike back together and its sitting in the garage ready to blast out the door in the morning when my son wakes up. He is gonna be pysched! He's 4 years old and he's been riding his 5 year old sisters trx70 for the past couple weeks when I've been fixing his 50. He already asked me this morning after seeing it back together..."daddy, did it get smaller"???
No problem, I have 2 more younger sons (2 and 1 month) so that little 50 is gonna get plenty of usage..

Steve, the tethercord is used for a parent to hold onto when the child is driving the atv. If they encounter danger or start getting out of control you simply pull the cord and it shuts off the bike (kill switch on a rope).
Its located on the back of the bike right underneath the seat. If you're looking at the back of the bike the plug input and cord are on the right side (same side as throttle on the handlebar). It should be attached to the grab bar if memory serves me correct. I'm at work right now. If you still cant find it I can take some pics when I get home and post them here. The cord should be wound up and hanging inside a wire tie on the grab bar. If its not there maybe it popped out and its lost. Could be the reason for your bike not starting. If its not plugged in or not firmly plugged in you will get ZERO SPARK.

that sucks, because my quad is a 250 and not ment for a kid [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img]
it has no tether cord, so my problems are probably worse ($$)[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img].

hi I have an lt 50 there is no spark at the plug . Plug is ok coil is new . There is power coming out think about 3 volts but when I plug into the coil pack and pull it over nothing comes out . I have no kill switch connected . Do I need one for it to work Plz help

The LT50 has the simplest electrics of any Quad. An exciter coil in the flywheel and a coil/CDI for the HT. The wire between them has a tee to the kill switch on the handlebars which shorts it to earth to stop the engine. So if the wire between them isn't earthed or broken, either the exciter coil or the CDI coil is faulty.
