Default Crank Balancer

Is there a method or rule on aligning the crank balancer with or against the crankshaft. I have torn apart my LT250 R 87 to fix the crankshaft nut and Later in the day I found my son turning the crank balancer while I was cleaning parts.

So bacically I am asking if the crank balancer should be in a certian position while the crank is in another position and how do I tell or make this happen.

Thanks,

Jomama

I just looked at the fiche. It looks like all that has a keyway. I'd think a key fell out thus allowing it to spin.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually I took off the 2 sprockets on the crankshaft that was held on by the nut so I could clean the threads as the nut stripped off in a freak malfunction.
(previous owner error)

After I clean the threads and use locktight to re-attach the nut with the sprockets back in place, My question is: in the service manual is there a procedure for aligning the crank balance wih the cranck shaft when putting it back together so there is minimal vibration??

OK, gotcha.
What was I thinking. LOL

On my 250R (honda) there are dots on the gears (looks like a center punch was used to make a mark) that gets ligned up.
Dot to dot on mine. The book may mention this.

Hey, I didn't know that. What if I stupidly pulled off the sprocket without checking that first. DOOH!

Thanks,

Joe

On second thought there should be a method for placing the cranshaft sprocket on the shaft then aligning the balancer sprocket with it, Right?

Yes. That's what the dots are for on mine.Sometimes the splines are made to fit only one way..
I did the same thing first time splitting the cases.

Thanks again for your help and I will be asking the mechanic at the dealer tomorrow when I pick up my parts.

I checked and both sprockets do have those stamped dots so I am sure you're right.

Does your manual give some advice on how to alighn them up as if you were building an engine from tear down??

Again, thanks for your help so far. At least I know know I just can't slap it back together and go, I have to get these in sync.
