Default to rebuild or not to rebuild? 2003 Ozark

My younger brother-in-law has an 03 Ozark. Being the generous kid he is, he lets anyone and everyone play with his toys. Unfortunately, one of his friends ran it into a tree. At the time they assumed the only damage was a bent bumper and life went on. No one noticed the semi-slow oil leak that had developed as a result of the crash. a few weeks later, everyone was having a good time and suddenly the quad stalls. Numerous attempts to restart were unsuccessful so my brother checks the oil. DRY! They push the bike home and immediately fill it with oil. When they finally do get it to start, a loud metal on metal pinging sound rings out from the engine and after two minutes or so it dies and will not restart unless it sits for a few hours.

This is my first post on these forums, but I'm no newbie to offroad riding. My personal tastes are two stroke dirt bikes, and I can strip and rebuild them in a matter of hours. I've never taken apart an ATV, let alone a 4-stroke.

I'm 100% sure the top end needs a complete rebuild, that shouldn't be a problem. What intimidates me to some extent is that pesky oil leak. I've traced it to the bottom of the engine, along the center seam. From what I can see, the case needs to be cracked open, and the seal between the two halves fixed.

How difficult is this seal to replace/fix? Is it worth it? I'd love to help the kid out if I can.
