Check the vacuum operated petcock. Search the forum and I had similar problems. To do this put the petcock in "pri" and disconnect the vacuum line to the front of the carb. Cap or plug both lines and then try to run it.

Then you have to do one of two things;
get a new vacuum petcock ($70) which is funny because the diaphram is the only thing that goes bad and shouldn't cost over $10.
or put two vacuum caps over the two ports (be sure to zip tie both of them).
The best way that I've found to determine if the petcock is at fault is to go to an auto parts store and get a universal windshield washer tank and use it as a test gas tank. If it runs fine with the test tank the petcock is faulty.
Hope that helps. It took me several days working on this problem to figure it out.

Sounds to me the pilot jet is plugged. Runs fine on choke...but when the choke comes off it dies?
Very common issue. Once the pilot jets are removed and either cleaned, or replaced, make sure you leave the float bowl dry when in storage, and the jets will never plug up again. Just use the little screw at the bottom of the float bowl to drain out the gas, if the motor isnt gonna be started for more than a couple of days.
The pilot jet has a very tiny hole which runs the length of the jet...if you cant see light come thru the hole, (like looking down a drinking straw,) it may be very hard to clean. The hole is like .012 and there isnt much you can do except try and soak them overnight in carb cleaner, and blow them clear the next day. If they wont clear out,Just go buy some new ones at the dealer.
