Studs vs chains on frt wheels
#1
I am hesitant to put chains on the front of my quad. The front ends are not that strong and I fear extended use with chains may cause damage. So I was wondering if anyone had tried studding up thier front tires. I am looking at a new set of Big Horns and was thinking about drilling & studing them ( frt & rr ). The ribs are plenty strong to hold them and could probably be run year round as long as they weren't run on pavement. I would like just a little more grip so it will turn sharper without having to pick the blade up so much when turning around.
Any thoughts?

I'd vote for studded tires over chains. Depends on the terrain though. Chains might be better for snow, studs for ice. Chains will act more like scoops n paddles, but won't cut into the ice.
I've been wanting to stud my tires for a long time now, just never got around to it. I think I could get over wet logs easier if studded. Its simple to do, just get a big bag of hex head screws and screw them in. Make sure you don't get too long of a screw, lol.

In the old days, we used to stud our dirt bike tires, but there are trade-offs. On wet logs they help a lot, however on wet rocks, concrete, pavement, etc............you better hang on tight & punker!!!!! They skate!!!
We always drilled them with a depth gauge and used the longest studs we could find. Then, chose your terrain wisely! I never tried screws, always thought they might pull out, but they would be easier to install.

There's a thread over in 3wheelerworld that has pics of a screwed tire he runs on a flat track. He shaved the tread off and then studs them. Some rule that you have to run slicks,,, but I guess studs ain't in the rules. No, I dont think they would work too well on pavement, but cuts into the hard pack dirt like claws.
