Default Web Cam - Stage 1 vs. Stage 2

Hello folks,

Ive been looking into cams for my QS and I looked at hotcams and it looked to be a topend focused cam, so I went to webcams and they look good but I dont know which one to choose. I know I dont need the stage 3 because its for high-strung motors, but is the stage 2 worth the extra $100 for the spring & retainer kit i will need with it? I do alot of trail riding and Im looking for as much torque as possible, but I dont want to lose any topend. Also Im assuming that I will need to send in my old cam to get re-worked right? If anyone knows anything about these cams any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I just got in my stage 2 webcam with the performance springs and crmo retainers. I haven't had a chance to use it yet because my cylinder is currently sent out and will come back rebored/resleeved w/ the 70mm piston (making it a 260cc). Anyway having the machinist put the new valves, springs, retainers in and should get that back anyday. Soooo saying a whole lot of nothing I don't know of anyone yet who has done just a cam without doing other mods such as a bigbore kit. I would say go with the stage 2 webcam because, why not? Do you want to get the stage 1 and get it all together and be riding wondering should have spent a little more and installed the stage 2.

You will send in your original cam and if your not asking for a custom grind and your not then they can turn right around and send you whatever stage you ordered right off the shelf and you will get a $70.00 core charge credit. If you choose to send it in later you can get the refund up to 6 months after purchase. All said and done (me sending in the core) receiving new stage 2 with performance springs, crmo retainers w/ shipping both ways it cost $192.00.

You should get the springs no matter what,,, even if you stay with a stock cam. The springs keep the valves closing at high rpms.

Hotcams is just a stock cam with a misprint. Besides, Hot-anything is made in Taiwan. Do you want any tools made in Taiwan???

You could always call Lori at webcams n ask (ie. ask to speak with Lori). She told me they have 13 other grinds NOT listed in the catalog for the 230.

Megacycle is another option.

So, now you have 18 choices, lol... Ain't ya glad you asked???

hmmm... I just checked out megacycle and they look to be more midrange and topend than I really need. So if i went with a web stage 2, what retainers should I get? Is it worth the extra money for the titanium?

I went with the CrMo retainers and that was what was recommended to me. If you were going w/ the stage 3 then I wouldn't hesitate getting the Titanium retainers.

Webcams is measured at .050 lift and megacycle is measured at .040 (1mm) lift. You can't really compare the 2 like that. Actually, megacycle is barely more duration than stock, just a LOT more lift. Webcams is a radical departure from stock,,, mostly due to the "square" cam design.

Titanium is much lighter than steel. The idea is to get your valves to close at high rpm, and shedding as much weight as possible helps. If you're going to putt around, then it don't matter.

I dont know. I dont know if they tested the cams or ever did any research or anything. All I know is they have lots of cams, Lori owns the place, and she's cool to talk with. See if she can get you the .040 measurements so you can better compare with megacycle.

um... so does that mean that the megacycle is a torquey cam? what do you mean by "square" design?

If stock is a torquey cam, and megacycle has just a little more duration than stock, I'd say megacycle is torquey. And because it has a high lift, it will flow well for the higher rpm stuff.

A square cam is when the intake and exhaust duration are the same.... ie 260/260 is square as opposed to 260/262 where the exhaust is longer. I always like the exhaust to be longer because the exhaust valve is so much smaller. That's just one of my "rules of thumb".
