Just bought a 2003 z400 has some issues
#1
I got this off of a guy and it runs great, it has some things that seem odd to me on it.
First off here is what I know is done to it:
-Stage 1 dyno-jet
-K&N Air Filter
-The thing was removed from the inside of the stock pipe (dont know the name of the thing)
Thats all I know of for performance stuff.
Here is whats weird to me:
-It had way too much oil in it, after i got done test riding it for about 2 minutes, I went to check the oil and it overflowed out of the reservoir. It ran great though, no smoke or anything.
-There is a cable missing from the rear brake, but the rear brake worked fine. (possibly parking brake) How hard is that to replace?
-And lastly, the front shocks did not have the reservoir like my buddys '06 model.
Help is appreciated
-Thanks!

The oil is probably something very simple.. The owner's manual to most atv's say they hold a distinct amount of oil. That is if the engine is totally clear of oil, and we all know this is not possible. Even changing the oil and not changing the oil filter can cause over-filling the oil tank. I would change the oil and change the oil filter. Then check the owner's manual, put a little less than it says, then ride and fill the tank accordingly. Next, the parking brake has probably been removed, for some reason on sport quads people buy a block-off plate. It has something to do with the parking brake setting off the rev limiter.. It is a very easy fix though..

03's didn't have rezzies like the newer ones, just your average run-of-the-mill shocks with pre-load adj.
Sounds like he put a parking brake block-off on it, that's why there's no cable to the rear brake. Should be easy to put one back on, check e-bay. (I have a block-off on mine too)
The oil tank has a dip-stick to check the oil, if there's too much in it, there's a drain bolt on the bottom.

yes you drain both the engine and the oil tank......... then you fill the tank and wait a while for the oil to drain into the engine before you start it.......... I would go on ebay and pick up a manual if I were you. They are nice to have........

thanks for the answer. I have a manual from ebay, in an electronic format. it takes a bit to find the right page, so I thought I'd ask the quick question. i'll double check it tho.

why do you want a parking brake ,turn off the engine and put it in to first gear.
all the parking brake does is wear out your brake pads
