I know that some people take it out on purpose. Ive done it on a little yamaha i had. It shouldn't really be too bad for it, although if you want the extra power from taking it off, jetting is probably a good idea. The only thing that it may be bad for that i can think of is your valves or your neighbor's ears. I was just told about the valve thing before but i dont know if it is true or not. I rode my lt230s without a sparkarrestor for some time and havent noticed any damage. however, i do have an exhaust with it back in now.
Hope i could help

I guess there is a chance you could start a fire. That's what they say anyway..... Other than that, the spark plug may be a little on the sooty side and may foul on you. Probably will lose some power as it gets hotter due to running rich.

I've heard lots of old timers talk about burning your valves if you remove a muffler or something. I haven't been around long enough and worked on enough engines to really pin down a cause for it, although I see burned valves all the time. I'd have to agree with the article though... The hotter the engine, the more likely you will burn a valve.

Actually, you want negative backpressure. Backsuction if you will. This is why you cannot run no pipe at all. You might think that no pipe would give the least amount of backpressure, and at first thought that sounds about right. But actually, the escaping gases are traveling so fast inside a pipe that they have a negative pressure (suction) behind them that sucks even more gas into the combustion chamber during valve overlap. Having no pipe elimnates this effect and is probably the highest amount of backpressure you can have without actually sticking a banana in the pipe.
