Default 86 Quad Sport Carbuerator

I have an 87 Quadrunner with a 86 Quadsport carb on it (don't ask why). Any how I have it running and thought I had carb problems, it would break up under throttle. I thought it was the carb so I began messing with the float level. I came to find out it was an intake leake between the carb and head. With this fixed I dont know where to set the float level. I have a Clymer manual but my float is not round it is "D" shaped and made of plastic, not metal. The manual says 0.98" from the base which I assume is from the base to the bottom of the float but with this "D" shape the bottom is different. Should the round part of the "D face the top of the carb? Do you measure it with the carb up right (float hanging down) or up side down? And finally what should the measurement be on this "D" shaped float? I do have a round float from the parts bike if it would be better to use that.
Thanks
