info 87 lt4wd?

Hi,
recently bought an old lt4wd and I'm trying to get an overview on the status:

Needs quite a but of TLC and some new parts, but parts list operate with "model H, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, R and S, and hence several choices for parts. ls there any way to know for sure which one I got?
One thing that needs immediate attention is rear u-joints. Can't find u-joints in any parts list, just complete drive axle. However, I found this: U-joint 1987 suzuki quad runner 250
Anyone know for sure if this will fit? As far as I can tell there are more than one type of 250 quadrunner..
And a question about diff lock: Is the rear permanently locked, and the "diff lock"-option only applies to front axle?
This one has been used for training sleddog teams, which will also be my primary use, so it has just chugged away at idle in 2wd most of the time and haven't that much heavy abuse. But nonetheless, the transmission and low-range is acting up a bit sometimes, so I'm wondering if it's just as I should expect from these old beaters or if I should worry:
It's very difficult to put it in and out of low range handle, when the transmission is in neutral, you need to set it in gear and almost get it moving to get the low range lever into low range or back to normal.
Also gear shifting seem somewhat imprecise, especially when I try the higher gears. Does it need to get the revs properly down before it will shift? And when I try to shift down to neutral: If I stall it in gear and need to get it in neutral to get it started again, the green light is sometimes hard to get on. Doesn't seem to be a problem when it's moving.
And the reverse sometimes doesn't go in gear and doesn't move when giving throttle. If the idle is to high, will it refuse to go into reverse? It's been rather cold and some choke and and a bit high idle has been necessary so it wouldn't stall.
I know it's an old bike and doesn't expect perfect performance, but would like to sort out what's ordinary behavior and what's danger signals..

Those are the years. You can only get the latest year parts in most cases.

Are the u-joints different for the different 250's?

Rear is permanently locked. Front is lockable.

Try adjusting the cables. They're probably stretched and corroded.

Well, I don't know? I reckon when they just state "1987 Suzuki QUAD RUNNER 250 4WD", they should fit mine? I see that aftermarket brake shoes also are sold, just stating "1987 LT4WD", but in the OEM parts list they operate with two different part numbers, where one model differ from the others. Question is, are there any real differences in parts like these, or are they interchangeable and as long as the listing only says quadrunner 250 4wd or LT4WD I should not worry?

Will give it a try. The shifting is consistent, at least. The same trick works every time, and the general impression is that the transmission just is a bit primitive in it's function and takes a bit of getting used to. I reckon these atv's are quite durable, so I probably don't need to worry. I reckon. I hope.

In the parts lists for a 1987 LT4wd, they operate with several model letters, and there are different parts. Two different carburators, two different carriers, and so on. And that's all well as long as I can see which one I got. But as an example:brake sylinder. Here there are two different parts number, but without knowing the model I can't say for sure since the drawing can't help me.

Then, since yours is an 87 and an H model, you get the H one. The letters are the model years. Nothing more complicated than that.
For the carb, you can only get the latest one.... 13200-19B02. That one replaced 19B01 and that one replaced 19B00.

I always use this site for looking stuff up: http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_atv_parts.htm Its faster than many other sites and I can zip around and figure things out. In 1987, there was only one 4wd and only one 4-stroke 250cc anything. So, if you get anything for a 1987 250 4-stroke suzuki, it will be the right one. Back in those days, 4wd was new and they simply called it a LT4WD and until the 300 version came out there was no need to specify what size the LT4WD was. The 300 version is called LTF4WDX King Quad starting in year 1991.

I don't know.... I, and many others, have 85 and 86 230 quadsports and never have shifting trouble. About the only difference in design is the cables on yours. The shifting mechanism is probably the same.

Is there any way I can check year on my atv? VIN? I see that there are some parts that apparently is 1989, so I would like to verify what the seller claims.
