Default Ozark 250 good starter ATV?

I'm new to ATV'ing and was looking to get into the fun for around $2000 - $2500. I was trying to avoid the Chinese stuff and found a used Ozark 250 '07 in my price range.

I'm interested in riding with my son on our farm and just having fun. I'm around 6'4" 230 Lbs, is this enough machine size-wise and power-wise or do I need something bigger?

Thanks for your help,

JB

Ozarks are great machines. I am bigger than you and it can take me most places fine. Personally I think it is the best 250cc-350cc ATV out there.

lzydaze, I own a Ozark 250. Actually my wife does. I bought it for her [caugh, caugh] for Christmas. it is a great trail machine. I've rode sport quads years ago and those are fun, but the clutchless shifting makes it a much more liesurly (sp?) ride. Perfect for some one that calls themslf Lazydaze lol!

I am much smaller than you at 5-9 180lb. But my neighbor has the same quad as I and he is 6-1 220lb. And he wants another.

Opt for a winch though, just in case you go off trails and get stuck. It isnt a beast off the trails. The tires arent the best, and it isnt 4x4.

If you plan to ride two to a atv. Plan on getting a cushion. The quad really isnt made for two. A cushion is a whole lot better than the rack to sit on.

Good luck.

I second the suggestion on different tires. We have some kind of mud tire on the back of my wifes Ozark and she follows me through most of the junk that I ride through (of course she is crazy and knows I have a winch!)

Lzydaze. I would really suggest you get a quad that has a bigger engine and four wheel drive. The ozark is a great machine but you will outgrow it pretty fast. Maybe you could do a bit of extra work and save up for maybe an older honda 350 4x4, or a yamaha grizzly, or maybe an older suzuki eiger or something. You might not believe me right now, but once you ride both the ozark and a larger quad theres a big difference. Anyways i would hold off if i were you untill i saw a 4x4 for a good price. Sometimes polaris sportmans and artic cats go cheap nowadays too. Good luck

The Ozark is a great maching and if you can find an "07 for under $2,500, that's a great deal. I got one for my wife and then my son mostly took it over once he outgrew his TRX90. The Ozark goes anywhere our larger 4wd's go. Sure, it's gotten stuck due t lack of 4wd, but it's also made it through stuff that bogged down the bigger 4wd machines. It's fast, reliable and fun to ride, all in all a great maching and the best in it's class. I consider the Ozark and the Recon about equal in all areas with the Ozark haveing a slight edge on things like disc brakes and more power.

The only down side is that I think that your size is a bit large for the Ozark. I'm 6'-2" and about 210, I can ride the Ozark just fine but I feel a little cramped on it. I just can't move around like I want to sometimes. It's not enough to say that I can't ride the Ozark and be comfortable but it is enough to mean that I would not get the Ozark as my primary ride.
