Default LT230 problem

Hey guys, I just acquired an LT230 quadsport I am unsure of the year but I think it is an early model. Anyway I started it up last night and rode it a little bit then I put it back in the garage. When I went back to start it later, the kick start was locked. any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

i am sorta new to all this too, but do you have the compression release lever still installed? sometimes when mine stalls out, i cannot pull the kicker out until i release the compression lever. mine is actually missing, so for now, i use a pair of pliers to open the valve. i just ordered a new lever/perch assembly off of ebay and a new cable. makes starting a lot easier. this may not even be your problem either. i am just guessing. the motor isn't locked up is it? also possible internal meshing problem.

mine is missing the lever as well but i have just been pulling it up with my fingers when i start it, and it is clicked off right now and the lever is still tight. The engine isnt locked up because I roll started it today. When I pull on the lever it feels "locked", if i push it towards the frame it has a little bit of slack but if i pull it away from the frame it feels like something is holding it.

I've never heard of this problem, but here is a schematic of the kicker: http://www.alpha-sports.com/satv/1986/LT230S/26.htm

Can you push the kicker down while its running? If so, does it make any noises?

It is locked up when running as well. So no it doesnt make a noise. Looking at the schematic I can't see anything that would cause it to behave like it is

I can't either. You may have to tear into it to find the problem.

The gears are pretty robust, but I always tell my plump pals to use the compression release even though they're massive enough not to need to.

my guess is it is tear apart time. something could be broke and wedged itself between gears 5 and 3. hopefully it is something simple as that instead of something broken like shaft 7.

I will probably continue to roll start it, because I am not familiar with this kind of ATV at all and I would like to put off tearing into it as long as possible

From my experiance which isnt much...just tore into mine the other day because of this...the 2 gears that join at the kickstart end to actually will manage to rotate themselves out of place eventually. Because they are only halfgears hence they have gear only on 1 side of each gear. mine actually rotated around enough that it bound up...which is what u are experiencing..i bet u pop it apart and that would be ur issue
