Default LT230S Questions?

Ok, I have a 1988 230S Quadsport which I purchased around 7 years ago. When purchased I was told that it was bored .80 over. Also ported, polished and had a upgraded cam. It ran for about 2 yrs without a issue and then got hit with a stater problem. Well it sat for year, I rebuilt the carb, replaced: Handlebars, throttle, throttle cable, kill switch, spark plug, oil filter, and coil. When doing so I noticed that it seemed to have a valve clatter and did not want to idle. I was thinking that the valve springs were bad and need replacing. I spoke to a mechanic and was told that it need a full rebuild. I need some direction on where to go from here. Can I adjust the valves and be fine or do I need to replace them? Thanks for the advice.

Default LT230S Questions?

I'd adjust and go from there.
A compression test may help.

Default LT230S Questions?

If the engine doesn't smoke, I would just adjust the valves (whatever the recommend lash is by the cam manufacturer), go for a few rides and check the intake valve again. If the gap closed any, you'll need a new intake valve. Other than that, I don't see a reason to tear it apart.

You should also check the cam chain tension. A loose chain flopping around could be producing the noise you're hearing.
