Default LT230 Hi-Velocity Intake Porting

Alright, well we all know about my EPIC FAIL with the 4-Valve Head venture, but I've still got valves and performance in my mind.

Now we all know that the 230 suffers from a boxy intake port design from a utility motor. And I was thinking about this thing I read up on a while ago from motoman from mototuneusa.com; hi-velocity intake porting. Now, I dont want to really reduce the port size so much as I want to fill in the boxy corners with JB. However, its been a while since I've had my head off, and I kinda want to know what to expect, so, does anybody have some pics of the intake ports?

Do you think it would be worth it?

Yes, its worth it.

This is a 250S head. Most of the port work is done already from the factory. The 250S head is a 230 head that's been somewhat ported and has a +1mm intake valve.

Notice the sparkplug orientation in that pic. I used washers to get the plug aiming the flame front right at the piston.

I have some stock 230 head pics too.... Somewhere.

So how did your a-arm extension project work out?

WOW,, in depth to say the least.
Good for you.
Top motor builders use epoxy instead of JB.

justrandy, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! i couldnt have asked for a more on-point, detailed response!

but let me ask you, is the vane worth doing? and how much of a difference is there between the 230s head and a 250s head (besides the +1mm intake valve). I mean, port-wise, is it just more work but they have about the same potential, or what?

I dont mind alot of work since my cylinders gonna be out to kustom kraft for a while.

re-porting the intake is a LOT of work. it takes the right hi-temp aluminum epoxy, a steady hand with a good Dremal drill and lots and lots of time and patience. if all that goes well, you are gonna want to oversize the valves more than +1mm and have them ground with a multi- angle profile.

well, how much bigger could i go with the valves, and how much do you think all of the machine work would cost?

also, for the bigger valves, there wont be a specific part number so what do i do, send my old valves to kibblewhite or someone like that and tell them to whip some up in +Xmm?

i'm not a "mechanic" i'll tell ya straight up.
i can rebuild a carb on just about anything but when it comes to busting open a motor, i just don't go there. when i had my motor rebuilt, it was a mess and i had the cash to do it. i could have gone for a standard "bottom up" rebuild, crank bearings, rod, new piston, valves etc. but Mummz The Word Racing has built Daytona winners and since i had a +4 swingarm, i went for the whole enchalada.
is it worth it it? you want to spank a 400EX and leave 'em in yer dust?
speed costs money.
i got a 1st gen. that's arguably that best looking and fastest 230 Quadsport on the planet earth.
you be the judge.
race ya to the tree! (for pink slips, that is!)

If you can find a valve bigger than 33mm, go for it. I couldn't. I looked thru the entire vesrah catalog. 1mm isn't worth anything anyway, but if it matters, the 250s head comes with one.

Back when I was porting my 460 ford, I found a site plum full of pics and tuts for porting. The 460 heads had thermactor bumps in them. When porting you had a choice.... Either grind the bumps down, or grind them into a vane. Turned out the vane flowed better than the head without the vane, so I alway grind in vanes if I have an opportunity. I think the vane decreases turbulence or something.

Kustom Kraft took a whole month or longer on my jug, so you'll definitely have time.
