Default 85' lt230s chain sprockets and tire ?'s

New here and have an 85 lt230s thats in need of a new chain sprockets. So my ?'s are should i put different tooted gears in? Idk what the stock numbers are but i was looking at sunstar sprockets (let me know if there any good or if i should look at a different manufacture) my tooth options are 11 12 13 for the front and 39 41 42 43 for the rear. Please let me know what the stock numbers are as my quad is at my house upstate and i can not look at it to count the teeth. So should i go with stock numbers or change the ratio. Also what make chain is a good choice i know i need a 520 but how many links? As for the tires i bought stock size kenda klaws a few years ago and the rears seem way too big for this small motor i was wondering what size tires you guys would suggest if any. thanks

hey welcome to the forum!

230's perform best with 20" rears. and personally, i like 13/41 gearing but that may be a little tall for some peoples likings. what kind of riding do you do?

and 230s need very special attention in the chain department. buy O-RING chain, i use standard EK 520. i get my chains from MOTO-CHAINS , Motorcycle ATV Motocross Chains n Tires pretty good prices.

for sprockets, steel is the way to go. aluminum doesnt last long and should really only be used on all-out racing applications. i prefer sunstar myself.

if you are replacing your chain and sprockets because the chain keeps coming off, you probably need swingarm bearings, too. very common on these bikes.

i suggest you look at the monster 230 thread also.

good luck!

im pretty sure its 84 links for the chain, but if you go for 13/41 gearing you MAY need another link or two.

20's and the 13/41 gearing sounds like it would work great for you. however, if you keep your 22's or whatever is stock, go 12/41 because i tried 22's on 13/41 and it was WAY too high.

and DID makes very good chains. i have the atv x-ring chain on my 250r and love it. however, it is a higher quality chain than the EK and since its more race oriented it tends to have a little bit thinner construction and the x rings are thinner than o rings. the EK chain is more "crude" and has thick beefy plates and big o rings. the only reason why i like the EK better for the 230 is because theres less lateral compliance (side to side movement) with the extra beefiness (mass), and that helps keep the chain on. i get real specific with the final drive because the OEM chain slack setting (which is the only way to go, it seems too loose but if you adjust the chain tighter to where it seems like it should be, you will kill swingarm bearings and start throwing the chain at any slack...), theres quite a bit of room to slap around, and side to side movements is what causes chain derailment (and for 230's, imminent sidecover damage). i also suggest getting a case saver like part #65 as seen here:
