Default In reverse, but won't move....

'98 Quadrunner, shaft drive.
When I put it in reverse the shaft will turn, but the rear diff just makes noise. Now it'll go forward, but not reverse, though the furthest I've driven it forward it 10 feet to get it back in the garage.
I picked this up as a project cheap, so there may not be much if any gear oil in the rear diff. Would that cause this problem?

ant thoughts?

Best to strip down and see if there are any teeth left. Also bearing state-may have collapsed. Splines on axle.
Is this IRS?

When I get a chance I'll pull it apart. I'd rather it be in the diff than the tranny. I don't want to mess with pulling the motor.
What's IRS?

if ur driveshaft is turning but not moving its definately in the rear end. and if you have to change bearings ur talk 80 bucks or so, but if you have the replace final bevel gears then that jacks it way up. either way its a good quad and if you dont have a lot in it its worth fixing
