Default LT230 wont idle and running outta ideas..

i have a 1987 lt230 and when you first fire it up it'll idle beautifully then it do kinda a small pop alomost and will idle high then if i get it to idle back down again it'll stall... it almsot sounds like it's popping back through the carb. i set the valves and have cleaned the carb very well...i thought it might be a lean burn pop but i cleaned the carb... maybe a air leak but i found no tears in the boots. it idles up almost like it have an air leak...i also cant get the float to work properly...if i leave the tank on it'll fill the air box... it has the brass floats but i'm not sure if the little bent tab that holds the float is to be bent up away from the float pin or towards cause it can fit both ways...if i blow through it and flip the carb i cant blow through it...

Sounds like you have a bad needle and seat on the float. It's sticking open/not closing tight and allowing gas to pour in. You need to get that fixed, as it will obviously not run right like that, but will also ruin your engine if raw gas is allowed to run out and fill the chamber, and get into the oil. Gas does not lubricate real well!

Buy a rebuild kit, it will come with a new needle/seat. Or do yourself a favor and upgrade to a 28mm flat slide carb. It will give you a nice performance boost!

what about compression??? how much psi should i see??? i tore apart the carb and got a rebuild kit. i noticed the kit had a larger main jet and smaller pilot.. i just ran all the parts that came with the kit. havent ran it yet carb is still in my truck. i noticed there was alot of carbon on the slide in the carb like it had been backfiring alot for some time... i was wondering it timing had maybe slipped...it didnt run to bad just didnt like to idle. how would i go about reseting the timming. i know theres susposed to be a line on the cam but not sure on the exact procedure...i set the tensoiner when the piston was at tdc under compressin... if anyone has the timming section out of a manual could they send it to me?

well i pulled the top cover and make sure i set the valves with it at tdc and the tensioner as well.. the timming marks were lines up so thats ok. ran good gas in it and it still just dies at low idle like someone shut it off instantly... i tried running good feul and no difference. checked the compression and it was 137psi... but i noticed when i ran it with the tank off i seen the coil ark down the terminal into the case a couple times... so i guess i'm gonna try another coil and hopefully thats the issue...

137 is too low on compression. 145 is bare minimum. time for a rebuild
