Question 87 lt230eh batter not charging?

first there is no battery on the bike still need to get one. but when i did start it i would use jumper cables to get it going. now my question is if i put a volt meter on the positive and negative terminals while its running no volts at all, also even if there is no batery on it when its running the head light should still right up right? not sure if its normal or not.

you shoud get voltage from the postive wire with a volt meter when running with no battery in it.. it is possable when u jumped it with 12 volts and could be a 6 volt system... if it is 6 volts u may have brunt out the voltage reg and possably the stator.. once u get a bat in it check again with a volt meter to see if it charging... if not try to change the voltage reg.. it cheaper and easyer then jumping the gun and changing the stator but if no change after the changing the reg i would change the stator as well.. hope that helps
