Motor has been sitting 3-4 years

Hi,
3-4 years ago I used up the last bore on my LT250R. I never got around to fixing it cause I didnt really have the cash to fix up a 20 year old quad. With summer coming around I'm getting antsy and wanna ride. I'm not worried about the top end, I just need a sleeve, piston, gasket set, and a new cool head dome.
What is worrying me is that I dont wanna drop 500$ into the top end and then realize the bottom end needs work as well. What are the problems I'm looking at? I dont mind doing small stuff but I dont really have the extra cash to have someone tear it apart and look at it.
Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the forums! If the bottom end hasn't been rebuilt,I would be a little worried because if it goes out it can take a new top end end out with it! Just make sure it's been covered up,NO rust, corrosion, plus check for ANY up and down slack on the rod,if any then must have a new rod installed! Plus turn the rod and crank around and if you feel any rough or grinding from the bearing area, this must be addressed! Also just sitting up is bad on water pump seals and crank seals. Basically what I'm trying to say I've seen this happen before! People would do a partial rebuild on an engine, only to have it fail! Just trying to save you at least the $500 you're planning on spending on a top end! It might be better to save up for a complete rebuild? JUST depends on the shape of the bottom end! OPT

I'm not sure about small engines but on vehicle motors if something breaks you have to tear it all apart an check it out to make sure you don't get metal shavings where there not suppose to be or you'll have to do a complete rebuild any way. Id take the motor apart an check it all over an if something needs replacing just do it so your not doing it again soon. And also check for scratch marks on the cylinder wall an crank, if there is some they'll need to be fixed. Spend a few extra bucks now so you don't waste all that money an time.
