Default LT230S Advice.. maintenance

Hey guys, I've got a couple questions.

Bought this bike, and I believe its almost entirely original. I think it was taken care of, not abused, but its time for some new parts.

Please excuse the pictures, its due for a bath as I got it a little dirty. I want to throw some new parts on it, and also clean it up and paint some of the original parts.

1. First question. What's the chain guide called in this picture? It seems pretty worn and due for replacement..

2. Next up.. what is the part name and function of the part with the red arrow?
The yellow arrow is pointing to the chain roller, correct?

3. Okay.. this skid plate that goes below the chain.. my chain does run across that plate and not only does it make a lot of noise, but it cannot be the intended design. THe chain is a little loose, and I plan on replacing it. But is that my only problem? I have tried to adjust the chain but I think it just needs a new one first. Name: IMAG1935_zps33c7bffc.jpg

4.I read in the LT230 manual that when replacing the chain, they suggest replacing the sprockets, but I thought mine looked good. Thoughts?

I plan on replacing the chain with a new one, any great sources or recommended ebay sources for all of these things?

I dont think That skid plate is original, I'd just remove it and replace it with the original plate.

The lower guide is to keep the chain from eating the chassis. Keep something there.

I'm starting to think the upper chain guide is to keep tension on the chain when the swingarm is compressed all the way. I would put a new on there as well. Those are about $20 on eBay.

It looks to me like your front sprocket needs to be replaced.

I would also say that unless you have records otherwise, that there is a 99% chance that you need to change your swingarm bearings and axle carrier bearings.

The whole chain system and rear end bearings are the one place you can not skimp with this atv. Everything else about it is very robust, but if you don't maintain these areas your chain will destroy your engine case.

When replacing the chain, always replace both sprockets as well. That front has worn and the teeth will not mesh as well causing premature wear on your new chain. For what it is worth, I have had good luck with the house brand Rocky Mountain sells. You can get a whole set for less than some top of the line chains alone. Just take care of it and they wear and last well.

The upper roller is also a chain guide, and should be replaced.

A lot of skidplates are designed for the chain to slide along a plastic slider. That may be the case here as well, with the slider having worn away or fallen off.

X2 on the skidplate. That is original to the 85 and 86 model 230 and there should be a plastic slider like Scooter86 said. I believe it is bolted onto the skidplate and should be replaceable.

You should always replace both sprockets when replacing the chain. Don't over tighten the new chain as that plays a big part in how long the swingarm and axle bearings will last. Like j_mauld said the swingarm is the weak link on these machines. 9 years ago I bought mine with a bad swingarm that had been welded at one time and after landing a small jump it broke and threw me sideways off the quad. $240 for a NOS swingarm 9 years ago wasn't cheap.
